Suicide attack kills 6 Pakistani soldiers (AP)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan ? A Pakistani Taliban suicide bomber rammed a car filled with explosives into a paramilitary camp in northwestern Pakistan on Saturday, killing six soldiers in the second attack in as many days meant to avenge the killing of senior commander in a U.S. drone strike.

The blast caused a part of a building to collapse inside the Frontier Corps camp, which was located in Bannu town in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said local police officer Tahir Khan. At least 19 soldiers were wounded in the attack, and rescue workers were searching for additional casualties, he said.

A Pakistani Taliban spokesman, Ehsanullah Ehsan, claimed responsibility for the attack in a phone call to The Associated Press. He said it was meant to avenge the death of commander Taj Gul in a U.S. drone strike in October in the South Waziristan tribal area, a key sanctuary for the militants.

Gul was the Pakistani Taliban's operational commander in South Waziristan and was responsible for many attacks against security forces.

Around three dozen Pakistani Taliban fighters armed with assault rifles attacked a paramilitary camp in Tank district near South Waziristan before dawn Friday, killing one soldier and kidnapping 15 others.

Ehsan, the Taliban spokesman, said Friday that attack was also meant to avenge Gul's death. The militants targeted the soldiers because of Pakistan's alliance with the United States, he said.

Ehsan pledged they would kill the kidnapped troops, saying "we are going to cut these soldiers into pieces one by one, and we will send these pieces to their commanders."

The Pakistani Taliban has waged a fierce insurgency in Pakistan over the past four years, killing tens of thousands of security personnel and civilians. Their aim is to topple the civilian government, partly because of its alliance with the U.S., and impose Islamic law throughout the country.

Pakistan has launched a series of military offensives against the Pakistani Taliban in the northwest along the Afghan border, including in South Waziristan.

Analysts say the operations, combined with hundreds of U.S. drone attacks, have contributed to a significant decline in violence in Pakistan this year.

The number of people killed in suicide attacks in Pakistan in the first 11 months of 2011 dropped almost 40 percent compared to the same period last year, according to data compiled by the Pak Institute for Peace Studies. Deaths from all attacks by Islamist militants fell nearly 20 percent.

But violence still takes a large human toll in the country in near daily attacks. More than 2,300 people were killed in militant attacks in Pakistan through November, according to the institute.

Motorola MOTOACTV firmware bump gives you marathon-battery life (video)

Fitness people love to make us feel guilty as they jog past the car, sneering as they watch us eat six double downs in one go. It's those people who will be happy that Motorola's Motoactv is getting a firmware update promising better battery life and power-saving settings -- including a marathon mode that'll give you eight hours of accompanied running. You'll also find additional clock faces and the ability to measure your heart rate even when stationary. You know, with their clear skin and no body fat, maybe they've got the right idea and we should give some serious consideration to changing our ways -- you know, in January.

GOP gains worry Californian on health care, social issues (ContributorNetwork)

The 2010 midterm elections were very predictable. But the GOP sweep left me with some concerns for the future that affect me and millions of other Americans who may be in the same boat.

[Your Voice: What worries do you have about politics in America? Sign up to contribute]

The top concern I have is talk of a repeal of health care reform, known to some as "Obama Care." The GOP, in particular incoming House Speaker John Boehner, has vowed to cancel major provisions of the recently enacted health care bill.

I am a four-time cancer survivor who cannot get insurance unless I want to pay more than $2,000 a month for it. "Obama Care" would help me reduce out-of-pocket expense of weekly doctor visits and medications that help me sustain life. Canceling funding would mean me and millions of American's who continue to be uncovered.

An additional concern that is equal to the repeal of the health care bill is the possible block of unemployment insurance by the GOP. They have voted to block any further benefits previously, yet our unemployment rate is still high.

If this is blocked, the rate of homeless will increase. There is a black hole when a person becomes homeless, making it harder to gain sustainable employment due to lack of address and, often, hygiene. By blocking these benefits, it could essentially put millions of Americans in that hard-to-get-out-of black hole.

Lastly, the GOP sweep is a blow to the plight of equality for gays. The GOP has strongly opposed gays openly serving in the military and their rights to marry. My brother is an openly gay man who has had his heart broken anti-gay measures around marriage. I am sure he is not the only one to suffer from the inequalities the GOP supports.

The GOP has openly it believes the sanctity of marriage would be affected by gays being allowed to marry. This is farthest from the truth. Their continuing to block equality across the board will do nothing but continue to hold our country back from the potential is has.

Amazon, Microsoft, Nokia Circling RIM (NewsFactor)

Not surprisingly, reports are emerging of big companies circling the wounded Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry. The companies include Amazon, Microsoft and Nokia, all of which have been rebuffed so far.

On Tuesday, Reuters reported that RIM has turned down overtures from Amazon and unnamed "other potential buyers" because it wants to fix its problems itself. Reportedly, a RIM acquisition has also been proposed by investment bankers to rival handset makers, including Samsung and HTC.

Turning Itself Around

The news service cited anonymous "people with knowledge of the situation," and noted that RIM and Amazon have declined to comment. Both companies are continuing discussions of other deals, such as a service that will make Amazon's music library available to BlackBerry users.

The story said the giant retailer hired an investment bank this summer to look into the possibility of a merger, but no formal offer was made. It's not yet clear if informal discussions included specifics such as price.

Reuters also reported that RIM's board of directors wants the company's co-chief executives, Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie, to attempt to revive RIM's fortunes through better use of its current product lines and worldwide infrastructure, and through the launch of new phones.

Other possible revenue sources include licensing of its new BlackBerry 10 operating system, built on the RIM-acquired QNX OS, after the expected release late next year of the BlackBerry 10 smartphone lineup.

A story in Wednesday's Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter," said Microsoft and Nokia had also recently held informal talks with RIM about the possibility of making a joint offer. But, as with Amazon, the company's executive leadership has decided to explore ways to turn RIM around. Microsoft and Nokia have formed a close alliance, where Nokia's phone lineup will use Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 operating system.

'When, Not If'

Laura DiDio, an analyst with Information Technology Intelligence Corp., said it's "a question of when, not if, somebody buys RIM." She added that "Microsoft and Nokia are desperate to get some traction" for their new joint endeavor, and adding RIM to the mix might help them do that.

As for Amazon, which has made a big bet in tablets but not in smartphones, DiDio said that it's important to "look five years down the road, to see what market they might want to play in." Amazon might also be interested in RIM, she said, to keep it from other competitors.

On Tuesday, RIM's stock, which has dropped 77 percent in the last 12 months, reached an eight-year low. In addition to intense competition from mobile devices from Apple and Android, the company has endured in recent months a litany of troubles that would make the biblical Job wince.

For example, the company announced last week that the launch of its much-awaited BlackBerry 10 line would be delayed from the first half to the second half of 2012, in part because the dual-core LTE chipset in the new phones will not be ready until the summer.

Earlier this month, a federal judge ordered the company to change the name of its new BBX operating system because of a trademark dispute with a New Mexico-based company. BBX, which had been unveiled in October, was renamed the BlackBerry 10 OS.

RIM's PlayBook tablet, now heavily discounted, has had disappointing sales. For enterprise customers, RIM is even offering a free PlayBook for every two purchased. An updated version of PlayBook has been delayed to next year. RIM is also trying to restore trust following days of service interruptions last fall.

The American Cancer Society Lost a Few More Supporters | Friendly ...

Not to rehash that whole controversy again, but here?s a story worth sharing, courtesy of blogger vnectar:

I said [to my husband,] ?Hey honey, I did a good deed today! I convinced K. not to donate money to the American Cancer Society!?.

Then I started laughing because I realized that I would sound like a monster to anyone not aware of the drama surrounding the ACS and an atheist organization who wants to donate an assload of money to them, but isn?t allowed.

Anyway, K. is organizing an event at work to raise money for a specific kind of cancer, so when she mentioned donating to ACS, I countered with links to stories about the drama and suggested a smaller charity that?s specific to the kind of cancer she?s raising money for. She agreed that the ACS isn?t worthy of her efforts, which made me feel a bit victorious.

There was no good reason for the ACS to reject money just because it came from atheists, and I hope that someone at the organization was reprimanded for turning away half a million dollars that could have gone toward a worthy cause.

But if they don?t want atheist-tainted money, there are other groups we can give our money to. And we will.

vnectar concludes her post with this:

? I realized that the ACS has no idea that their behavior is costing them donations from other avenues that aren?t at all atheist-related.

How do we let them know?

Simple: If the opportunity arises, we tell people why we?re no longer making contributions to the ACS. We point them toward other groups which focus on similar issues. We refuse to let the ACS get away with discrimination.

Also: The American Cancer Society still has a Facebook page and it?s been lacking atheist input lately?

?

***Update***: The ACS has responded again. And again, it?s neither accurate nor satisfactory.

Sasha Souza: 5 Tips For Guest Experience

Weddings are all about the details, but unfortunately sometimes the most important of detail of all is overlooked.

When planning a wedding, it's not uncommon for couples to take great strides to make sure the font is exactly perfect on all the printed pieces, the flowers are the right shade of cr?me or the linens match the bridesmaids' dresses within a half a shade of teal. But the most important detail of all isn't something that you can photograph or touch, instead the most important detail is all about the guest experience -- how the guests are thought about during the planning, meeting the guests' wants, and celebrating the guests' importance to the couple. This is, at the core, the difference between a bride hearing that her wedding was "the BEST we have had ever been to" and "thanks for the invite, we had a good time."

I make a big deal about the guest experience to my couples getting married and sometimes they don't know WHY I keep driving home the fact that it may be too cold after dark and they need to rent heaters, or why I will go to bat for a tent canopy if it's just going to be a little too hot at the time of guest seating. I am actually looking out for the guests, their experience and in the long run the experience the bride and groom will have when they continually hear how wonderful their wedding was.

Here are some of my tips for creating the best guest experience:

1) Provide enough heat after dark for an outdoor wedding:
It's a beautiful 80-degree day, but after the sun goes down at 7 p.m. you still have guests dining outside under the stars. Make sure to have heaters in place for your guests' comfort at night.

2) Give your guests plenty of seating room at dinner:
Don't seat too many guest at a dinner table to save money on centerpieces or keep groups together. Guests like to spread out when they sit down for dinner and not sit shoulder to shoulder with somebody they don't know or may not even like. By keeping 60" round tables to no more than 8 guests and 72" round tables to no more than 10 you will ensure that everybody will have their own personal space and be able to cut into the filet you spent so much money on.

3) Pay for staff... period, end of story:
Not having enough staff to serve the food properly leads to a long wait time for the guests to get their dinner. Whether it's at a buffet, a bar or a seated dinner, there is a direct correlation to the amount of staff and the overall flow of your wedding and the happiness of your guests. Follow these guidelines to ensure the guests don't have to wait:

? Best ratio of guests/server for a sit down dinner is 1:10 - yes, that's ONE PER TABLE of 10. That server will not only serve but can also pour the wine at dinner for the guests. Dinner will be served lickety-split and you'll be onto your first dance.

? 1 bartender and 1 bar back at the bar for every 75 guests

? 1 double-sided buffet for every 100 guests. Have 150 guests? Go with 2 double-sided buffets - it's always better to have more than less.

4) Guests shouldn't pay for anything:
Guests should not pull out their wallet a single time during the wedding. This means they shouldn't pay for drinks, valet, tips at the bar or the like. If you can't afford to serve hard liquor, forego it. The guests will not miss what is not there and will move on to a glass of wine, a glass of beer or champagne. But they will notice if they're embarrassed because they don't have the amount of cash needed to tip the valet. Remember you should always treat your guests as you would if they were visiting you at home.

5) Event Flow:
A two and a half hour cocktail party with one station of dip, bread and sliced vegetables makes for a very unhappy guest. Make sure to move the guests at least once an hour and to keep the party going. They are there to spend time with you and to celebrate your wedding, not gnaw on a raw carrot stick while you and your new spouse take 500 pictures after the ceremony. Here are some tips to keep the party moving:

? Keep gaps between ceremony and cocktail reception to 1.5 hours or less
? Keep the drive between ceremony and reception to less than 1 hour
? Be cognizant that while you may not be hungry, your guest may be, so make sure to feed them on time
? Keep to your timeline as best you can and the best way to do that is to hire a very capable wedding planner who can help you stay on schedule
? Keep your toasts to a maximum of 15 minutes

A well cared for guest is a happy guest and you can be guaranteed that your guests will remember most how they were treated at your wedding. Treat them well and you will have a wedding that the guests will talk about for years to come.

Deutsche Telekom could be forced into arms of Sprint (Reuters)

FRANKFURT (Reuters) ? Deutsche Telekom may be forced into a tie-up of its sub-scale U.S. wireless unit with Sprint Nextel after a $39 billion deal with AT&T collapsed.

AT&T said on Monday it had dropped its bid for T-Mobile USA, bowing to fierce regulatory opposition and leaving both companies scrambling for alternatives.

While Deutsche Telekom is now walking away with a $6 billion breakup package, its chief executive Rene Obermann has lost a lot of time and will now have to invest in the U.S. market or find a new way to exit the country, an option analysts regard as unlikely.

T-Mobile USA "is just crying out for a merger with Sprint. That's the only long-term solution for Deutsche Telekom," Will Draper, head of telecoms research at Espirito Santo, said.

T-Mobile USA, a growth engine in its early days but now a run-down asset, is badly lacking in the spectrum it needs to build a network capable of handling the vast data volumes that U.S. consumers and businesses use on smartphones.

Bleeding money and losing customers, it ranks fourth among U.S. carriers behind AT&T, Verizon and Sprint.

Obermann offered no detailed plan of how the company will bounce back from the collapse of talks with AT&T, only assuring investors he was working on a long-term plan for T-Mobile USA.

"In the long term, we need more spectrum and network capacity. We are working on that. But we will not speculate about any inorganic steps or deals," he told reporters during a conference call.

He also said it was incomprehensible to him that U.S. regulators blocked a transaction that would have made a decisive contribution to the U.S. National Broadband Plan.

Deutsche Telekom shares were down 1.3 percent at 8.77 euros at 1339 GMT, one of the biggest decliners in the blue-chip DAX index on investor concern the company is back at square one with its American problem child.

Before talks with AT&T were announced in March, sources said Deutsche Telekom was looking at a potential deal with Sprint. Reportedly, it was considering a sale of T-Mobile USA to Sprint in exchange for a stake in the combined company.

But instead of pursuing a tie-up with Sprint, Obermann bet all his chips on a deal with AT&T.

Now the company can go back to Sprint or pursue network partnerships with regional operators such as Leap Wireless International Inc. It could also offload some non-core assets to fund investments in the United States.

"Whilst a merger with Sprint is probably the best long-term strategic option in the United States, there would be pain for Deutsche Telekom in the near term, starting with the need to invest in Sprint/T-Mobile USA," Espirito Santo said.

SPECTRUM SQUEEZE

Adding to its woes, Deutsche Telekom missed out on spectrum sales in the United States while it was busy negotiating the T-Mobile mega-merger, leaving it even more vulnerable.

Carriers like AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Vodafone, have clamored for access to more airwaves to stave off a looming spectrum crunch that would mean clogged networks, more dropped calls and slower connection speeds for wireless customers.

"For the operators the main issue for the coming years will be to obtain enough frequencies... and to roll out 4G networks," said Heinrich Ey, Global Research Sector Head Telecommunications & Media at RCM, part of Allianz Global Investors.

As part of the breakup with AT&T, Deutsche Telekom will receive mobile spectrum in cities such as Los Angeles, Dallas and Boston, in addition to about $3 billion in cash.

While that will go toward helping T-Mobile USA grow, Obermann said it will not solve the long-term problem.

"One imaginable option would be a network partnership with Clearwire," LBBW analyst Stefan Borscheid said, adding he would also not rule out that Deutsche Telekom could find a financial investor willing to take T-Mobile USA off its hands.

Analysts have said a collapse of the deal could also be a catalyst for the sale of Deutsche Telekom's stake in Britain's biggest mobile company Everything Everywhere, unless it manages to clinch a deal with another U.S. operator.

Singer Etta James terminally ill (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Grammy-winning R&B singer Etta James is terminally ill, her live-in physician said in an interview this week that confirmed reports of the singer's fading health.

Dr. Elaine James, who is no relation to the singer, told a California newspaper in a video interview that the 73-year-old "At Last" singer has leukemia, dementia and kidney disease among her "many, many illnesses."

"At the present time, Etta is considered terminally ill," the doctor told the Press-Enterprise newspaper in Riverside, California, east of Los Angeles. Dr. James added that the diagnosis was made about two weeks ago by three medical specialists including an oncologist and an internist from a local hospital where the singer is frequently treated.

James' two sons, Donto and Sametto, told Reuters on Friday that they were not sure the terminally ill diagnosis was accurate and it was announced without the family's agreement.

The singer's sons are currently involved in a court battle with their stepfather Artis Mills over conservatorship of James' $1 million estate.

Both sons agree that their mother's health is deteriorating and felt that she should be admitted to hospital rather than receiving care at her home in Riverside.

"I saw her the day before yesterday, and I think she needs to be in the hospital. She doesn't look good," said Donto James.

With songs like "The Wallflower" and "Good Rockin' Daddy," James, a three-time Grammy winner, was a key figure in the early days of rock 'n' roll and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

The singer has battled obesity and heroin addiction throughout her life. She lost more than 200 pounds after undergoing gastric bypass surgery in 2003.

More recently, she was hospitalized in 2010 with numerous ailments including a bloodstream infection. She become ill while being treated for an addiction to painkillers and over-the-counter medicine in a detoxification center.

James has remained active in the music industry despite her ailments, and she released an album in November this year entitled "The Dreamer."

"I don't think it was meant to be her final album, of course she wants to make more music," said Sametto James.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It's almost winter, but get ready for some surf and sun: The Beach Boys are reuniting.

The founding members of the classic rock group ? Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine ? announced Friday they are getting back together to celebrate their 50th anniversary. They're working on a new album and also plan a 50-date tour that will take them around the world.

"This anniversary is special to me because I miss the boys, and it will be a thrill for me to make a new record and be on stage with them again," Wilson said in a statement.

The group also includes Bruce Johnston and David Marks, both of whom have been with the band for decades.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers gave birth to the California rock sound. Back then, the band members were Love, Jardine, Wilson and his two brothers ? Carl and Dennis Wilson, who have since died. With songs like "Good Vibrations," ''I Get Around" and "California Girls," the quintet embodied the fantasy of West Coast beach life. Their albums, particularly "Pet Sounds," influenced rockers of their generation and beyond.

But Wilson suffered mental problems that caused him to withdraw from the band, and there were years of animosity between Love and Wilson, who are cousins, as well as lawsuits among members of the band. Still, they have gotten back together over the years, including for their 40th anniversary in the last decade.

Love remarked in the statement Friday on how he and Wilson were getting along well, sharing compliments together in the studio.

"Music has been the unifying and harmonizing fact of life in our family since childhood," he said.?"It has been a huge blessing that we have been able to share with the world." Referring to a Beach Boy hit, he added: "Wouldn't It Be Nice to Do It Again??Absolutely!"

The group was supposed to announce their reunion as a surprise during the Recording Academy's live nominations special for the Grammys last month, but those plans fell through.

However, Jardine said the group planned to appear at the Feb. 12 Grammy telecast in Los Angeles.

"There will be a surprise at the Grammys," he told Rolling Stone. "We will do something really exciting. There's a lot of interest in it, which is nice. It's going to be a very big operation."

The Beach Boys first concert is scheduled for April 27 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Drug Users With HIV at Much Higher Overdose Risk (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Dec. 16 (HealthDay News) -- HIV-infected drug users are 74 percent more likely to have an overdose than those without HIV, a new evidence review finds.

Behavioral and biological factors may be among the reasons for this increased risk, according to the Rhode Island Hospital researchers. Drug overdose is a frequent cause of non-AIDS death among people with HIV.

The link between HIV infection and drug use is well documented, but the association between HIV and overdose has received less attention and was the focus of this study, which involved a review of 24 previous studies.

"Over the past 30 years, we have made impressive strides in caring for and prolonging the lives of people with HIV. Our study found that premature death by overdose is an issue that affects people with HIV disproportionately," study leader Traci Green, a researcher with Rhode Island Hospital and the Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research, said in a hospital news release.

"It is not entirely clear why the risk is greater, and few studies have endeavored to figure out why this might be happening," she added.

Biological factors may include clinical status, weakened immune systems, opportunistic infections and poorer physical health among HIV-infected drug users. Some research has suggested that hepatitis C infection and other conditions that affect metabolic ability may also increase the risk of overdose, according to the release.

Behavioral factors -- such as high-risk lifestyles and an increased rate of psychiatric conditions -- may also contribute to the higher risk of overdose among HIV-infected drug users, Green said.

Other possible factors could include homelessness and poverty, and poor access to medications and therapy used to treat opioid dependence, she suggested. Many HIV patients take opioid painkiller drugs as part of their treatment, while others use illegal opioids.

The study appears online in advance of print in the journal AIDS.

"Bringing overdose awareness and prevention into the HIV care setting is critical to reducing overdose deaths," Green said.

"Health care providers who treat HIV-infected patients with a history of substance abuse or who are taking opioid medications should consider counseling patients on how to reduce their risk of overdose. They may also consider prescribing naloxone (Narcan) to patients, or offering a referral to MAT (medication-assisted therapy) to reduce the risk of overdose," she advised.

Naloxone is a prescription medication that reverses an opioid overdose and has no abuse potential.

David Cross calls 'Chipmunks' experience 'awful'

David Cross wants to see "Alvin and the Chipmunks" buried six feet underground.

The actor/comedian recently ended his contract with the film franchise. Now he's put out a contract on the latest installment, "Chipwrecked," in an interview with The Playlist.

"This last film was literally, without question, the most unpleasant experience I've ever had in my professional life," Cross squawked about the follow-up to 2009's "The Squeakquel."

"It's safe to say I won't be working with some of those people ever again. Not the actors," continued Cross, who was contracted to do three "Alvin" movies. "It was just a really awful, unpleasant experience."

Playing record executive Ian Hawke, Cross has been one of the top-billed actors in the three installments of 20th Century Fox's mostly-animated franchise.

Jason Lee plays the other central human character in "Chipwrecked," which opens Friday. Lending their voices to the film are Justin Long, Jesse McCartney, Amy Poehler, Matthew Gray Gubler and Anna Faris.

The movie was directed by Mike Mitchell, for whom Cross saved some less-biting words.

"(He) was great," he said. "We got along. There were a couple of people, though it was just a really awful, unpleasant experience."

While Cross is trying to deep-six "Chip

Following the 2007 release of the first Alvin movie, he feuded with fellow indie comedian Patton Oswalt, who said: "Brian Posehn and I were offered the part of Ian, the agent. We both threw the script across the room in disgust. David Cross caught it."

In defending himself, Cross said the movie had earned him more money than "all my other projects combined," including TV shows like "Mr. Show" and "Arrested Development."

Cross will be reprising his "Arrested Development" role as "never-nude" Tobias Funke when the show makes its expected return in early 2013.

Dead woman found at warehouse of Belgian attacker (Reuters)

BRUSSELS (Reuters) ? Belgian investigators have found the body of a woman killed by a gunman who shot dead four other people, including a 17-month-old toddler, and wounded 125 in eastern Belgium Tuesday before shooting himself.

Prosecutor Cedric Visart de Bocarme told Belgian La Premiere radio station Wednesday the woman's body had been found in a warehouse used by the gunman. It brought the death toll, including the gunman, to six.

"A search last night revealed in a warehouse used by the attacker, notably to grow cannabis, the body of a woman killed by the attacker before he went to the Place Saint Lambert," he said.

Nordine Amrani, a 33-year-old previously jailed for possession of arms and drugs offences, hurled grenades and sprayed bullets into crowds of Christmas shoppers and children in a central square in the eastern city of Liege.

The attack paralyzed the center of Belgium's fifth largest city, with workers trapped in offices as police sealed off the area.

It was still unclear what drove Amrani to carry out the attack.

"The enormous concern we have is how it was possible for someone seemingly sensible and normal to do this. It was a delinquent, someone who had difficulties throughout their life," Visart de Bocarme said.

GREE part-owned social gaming outfit Gumi raises $26 million for global expansion and acquisitions

With GREE expecting to generate over $1.7 billion in its FY12, it's clear that the Japanese social mobile gaming space is continuing to explode.

Indeed, because GREE makes the vast majority of its cash from third party developers releasing games on its platform, that means that lots of Japanese social mobile game developers are also making a lot of cash.

One such as Gumi, which has just announced its raised $26 million from Jafco, Shinsei Bank, and DBJ Capital.

Getting sticky

Owned 20 percent by GREE, which also invested in an earlier round, Gumi now looking to expand to Korea, Singapore, and the US, in the process bulking up from its current 140 staff using its new cash for acquisitions.

Of course - as with all Japanese overseas expansion - what will be interesting to see is whether its existing IP will translate. According to TechCrunch, it has around 10 million users of its eight games. These appear to be in typical social genres Yakuza Wars and Pirate Wars plus the EA/PlayFish co-developed FIFA World Class Soccer.

Gumi expects to sell $50 million of in-app purchases during 2011, suggesting that it's generating plenty organic cash too.

Giuliana Rancic Getting Double Mastectomy For Breast Cancer ...

"E! News" co-host Giuliana Rancic appeared on Monday's "Today" to announce her plans for breast cancer treatment. Her husband Bill sat by her side as she told Ann Curry that she planned to have a double mastectomy.

36-year-old Rancic announced she had breast cancer in mid-October, shocking her fans and supporters. At that time, she said she announced that she had breast cancer so women her age would undergo breast cancer screenings at a younger age than typically suggested by the medical community.

Rancic and her husband were open about their struggles to get pregnant and chronicled two failed in vitro fertilization attempts on their reality show. A doctor asked Rancic to get a routine mammogram before her next IVF attempt, which showed that the "E! News" host had early stages of breast cancer.

Rancic told Curry that with a double mastectomy, the cancer would have less than a one percent chance of returning to her body. If she decided to have another lumpectomy (Rancic has already had a double lumpectomy that failed to rid her body entirely of cancer), radiation and medication, there would be a "20 to 30 to 40 percent chance" that the cancer could return in her lifetime.

Rancic said that determining her treatment path was "a very hard decision to come to." She added that "in the end what happened was Bill said to me...'I just need you around for the next 50 years, kid.'" Her husband also told her "I don't care what you look like...I just need you around. So, let's just get you healthy."

Rancic also opened up on her initial hesitation towards undergoing a double mastectomy. At first, she said she told her doctor she would "absolutely not" consider a double mastectomy as she would feel "disfigured." "The word was very scary," Rancic told Curry.

House panel subpoenas Corzine over MF Global

Lucas Jackson / Reuters

Jon Corzine, former chairman and chief executive officer of MF Global Holdings, has been subpoenaed by a congressional panel to testify about the brokerage's collapse and the missing millions of its clients' money.

By Msnbc.com staff and wire

The House Agriculture Committee has subpoenaed Jon Corzine, the former governor and senator from New Jersey, for a hearing next week?about MF Global, the now-bankrupt company that he ran which allegedly is missing about $1.2 billion of its clients' funds.

MF Global, which laid off all its employees last month,?filed for bankruptcy after a series of bad bets on European debt. Regulators and the FBI have been probing whether the firm used clients' money to prop itself up as its European bond investments went sour. Even the $1.2 billion number is in question, with some saying that the trustee in charge of the brokerage's bankruptcy may have double-counted some of the missing money.

Reuters reported that the congressional panel?voted Friday to issue the subpoena. Committee Chairman Rep. Frank Lucas, R-Okla., said Corzine hadn't yet confirmed that he would come and "his testimony is essential to fulfill our objectives." If Corzine, a former head of Goldman Sachs, shows up, it would be his first public grilling?since news of MF Global's problems emerged.

Corzine is also due to testify before the House?Financial Services Committee on Dec. 15.?

Reuters contributed to this report.

No. 1 Kentucky, No. 5 UNC both want to run

BC-BKC--T25-NCarolina-Kentucky, 5th Ld-Writethru,872Davis' block lifts No. 1 Kentucky over No. 5 UNCAP Photo KYJC103, KYJC102, KYJC101, KYJC111, KYJC108Eds: No. 1 Kentucky 73, No. 5 North Carolina 72. With AP Photos. Restores dropped word "lost."By COLIN FLYAP Sports Writer

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) ? Pushed and pressured all day, Anthony Davis finally went somewhere else no one could on the floor. Up.

The freshman soared to block John Henson's shot in the final seconds and No. 1 Kentucky held on to beat No. 5 North Carolina 73-72 on Saturday to extend the Wildcats' home winning streak to 39 games.

"I just jumped as high as I could with my arm up," said Davis, who had seven points and nine rebounds. "I thought I probably would (block it). I have long hands."

Freshman Michael Kidd-Gilchrist scored 17 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for Kentucky (8-0) and Doron Lamb added 12 of his 14 points after halftime in the heavily hyped matchup.

"I didn't realize, because I hadn't been watching much TV, that this game was being played up like the end alls of end alls," Kentucky coach John Calipari said.

Davis sure ended it, all right.

Reggie Bullock hit a 3-pointer for North Carolina (6-2) to cut the Wildcats' lead to 73-72 with 48 seconds left. After freshman Marquis Teague missed the front end of a one-and-one, Davis blocked Henson's shot, grabbed the rebound and the Wildcats ran out the clock.

"If he doesn't block the shot, we lose," Calipari said. "Both teams gutted it out, just gutted it out. This is supposed to be March, not now. I'm exhausted."

Tyler Zeller and Harrison Barnes scored 14 points apiece for the Tar Heels, who led by as many as nine in the first half and held a six-point lead in the second before Kentucky rallied.

The Wildcats haven't lost at Rupp Arena since Calipari took over, a span of 38 games that includes winning their final one at home under Billy Gillispie.

Lamb converted a three-point play as part of a 7-0 run that gave Kentucky a 63-60 lead. After Zeller hit a jumper to cut it to one, Lamb hit a pair of 3s, the second in the corner that gave the Wildcats a 69-64 lead with 3:47 left.

"He had a couple of layups, a couple of threes and they were big shots, they were big shots. That one in the corner was a huge shot and he knocked it down," Calipari said. "I've got good players. We're young, we're inexperienced, but I have really good players."

After a 3-pointer by Barnes, North Carolina's 11th of the game, made it 69-67. Darius Miller's basket made it 71-67. Henson hit two free throws and Kidd-Gilchrist answered with two more before Bullock's 3 set up the final sequence.

After Teague missed the front end of the one-and-one following a foul by Kendall Marshall with 21 seconds left, the Tar Heels had one more chance.

Marshall found Zeller and as Terrence Jones came to double team, he found Henson. Henson went up for a winner, but Davis used his 6-foot-10 frame and massive wingspan to block the ball. He grabbed the rebound as North Carolina never tried to foul as time expired.

"He came from the other side of the lane, it was a great play by him," Henson said.

Jones finished with 14 points and Miller had 12 for the Wildcats. North Carolina's P.J. Hairston scored 11 and Henson finished with 10.

Kentucky last reached No. 1 under Calipari in 2009-10, but promptly lost its first game after receiving the ranking. The Wildcats beat St. John's 81-59 on Thursday night before this matchup ? the first between top five teams in Lexington in 13 years.

Last year, these two teams played a pair of memorable games with North Carolina winning 75-73 in Chapel Hill before Kentucky topped the Tar Heels 76-69 in the NCAA regional finals in March.

This one was equally as entertaining even though North Carolina slipped from the No. 1 spot last week when they lost to UNLV in Las Vegas to keep this from being the first No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup in the 35-year history of Rupp Arena.

The Tar Heels committed five early turnovers, but Hairston, who had been questionable to play because of a sprained left wrist, hit a pair of 3-pointers upon entering to give North Carolina a 24-18 lead.

A jumper by Barnes extended it to 34-25, the biggest deficit the Wildcats faced this season and Kentucky trailed at the half for the first time this season, 43-38.

It's the first time the two schools have met this highly ranked since Dec. 26, 1981 in East Rutherford, N.J., when Michael Jordan, James Worthy and Sam Perkins combined for 66 points in North Carolina's 82-69 victory.

Kentucky standout Sam Bowie didn't play in that game because of a stress fracture in his left leg, but that game still featured 18 draft picks ? including five that went in the first two rounds. The NBA draft was 10 rounds through 1984.

This matchup had even more media anticipation and included more than two dozen NBA scouts and front office personnel. Kentucky's young squad that starts three freshmen and two sophomores responded.

"We felt like this was a good test to see where we're at against one of the best teams in the country," Miller said. "We came out with a W. I think we're all pretty happy about it."

(AP) ? Rafael Nadal returned to the comfort of clay and gave Spain a 1-0 lead over Argentina in the Davis Cup final by dispatching Juan Monaco 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 Friday.

Nadal broke his Argentine opponent seven times at Olympic Stadium in front of King Juan Carlos.

Four-time champion Spain looks to take command of the best-of-five series when David Ferrer faced Juan Martin del Potro in the second singles rubber late Friday.

Monaco held his first service game but Nadal took control by winning the next seven games. The six-time French Open champion dominated many of the long rallies.

"The best part of my game was I didn't make mistakes," said Nadal, who improved to 19-1 in singles play and 12-0 on clay. "The most important thing is we're up 1-0. We're confident David can make it 2-0."

In front of about 27,000 spectators, Nadal looked nothing like the player who struggled in the ATP World Tour Finals in London last week when he admitted to feeling less passionate about the game.

"Nothing is natural. It takes a lot of practice," the second-ranked Nadal said of making the transition between surfaces. "I'm really happy, this is a very important victory for me."

Nadal converted the first of 14 break chances with a forehand passing shot for a 2-1 lead.

"I was a little nervous at the start but after I broke him, I started playing well," said Nadal, who hasn't dropped a set in Davis Cup in over three years.

Nadal's impressive selection of winners ? he hit 26 in all ? kept Monaco off balance during many long rallies, with Nadal clinching the first set when Monaco netted a forehand.

Nadal enjoyed a remarkable fourth game in the second when the 10-time Grand Slam champ sprinted across the court repeatedly to keep balls in play before curling a backhand down the line for the point.

In the third set, King Juan Carlos out of his seat to applaud the fifth game. Monaco fell into the net to give Nadal a break chance, and the Argentine was again in the clay after a lengthy exchange that closed with a Nadal smash at the net for 3-2. Monaco had his left wrist taped along with a bloodied left knee.

Nadal didn't drop a point on his second serve and scored 89 total points to Monaco's 52. Monaco netted a backhand for his 43rd unforced error to end the match.

"I felt like I was playing well but, frankly, it's Rafa Nadal," said Monaco, playing in his first final against one of his best friends. "Where can you win a point off this kid, is what you're left wondering a lot of the time.

"He always recovered his positioning. With any other player, the point ends much sooner. He didn't give me any chances."

Spain hasn't lost on clay for 22 ties, including a record 20 straight on home soil dating to 1999 as it vies for its third title in four years.

Argentina is attempting its first Davis Cup trophy in its fourth final.
