Learn Your Way Around A Successful Weight Loss Plan | New ...

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

If now is the time in your life to lose weight, then you should decide on your target number and start formulating your approach. The suggestions in this article will help you drop the pounds and get the health and confidence you desire.

Fill your life with things that are colored blue. Eating from a blue plate can be a natural appetite suppressant. To see the type of affect blue has, have blue at the kitchen table when you eat. Stay away from warmer colors, like reds, yellows and oranges, because they encourage hunger. Studies show that visual cues are very effective in controlling what we eat. Remember this when choosing place mats, clothes, or even dishes.

Planning your meals in advance allows you to focus on your dietary needs, rather than leaving it to your impulses and hunger. If you make a plan for your meals ,it will be easier to avoid unhealthy food choices. Be sure to stay with this healthy eating plan. You can always mix and match the meals to prevent the plan from becoming boring, but you have to at least stick to the meals you choose and not substitute them with unhealthy choices. When you cook food at home, it has less calories than foods found at fast food restaurants.

You will want to lower your consumption of products containing caffeine. Studies show that caffeine can make you burn fat at a slower rate.

When you are trying to shed excess pounds, you will need a different approach to foods that are high in calories. For example, allow yourself a small piece of cake, but surround it with fresh fruit to make it something to savor. Balance each bite of the cake with a few bites of fresh fruit, this will help you to feel full and satisfied.

Some people weigh themselves regularly to help keep motivation while losing weight. The frequency varies from person to person. Get on the scale once every week. Weighing yourself once each day is ideal.

You do not need to avoid restaurants completely when you are dieting. In situations like this you should remember that restaurant portions are quite often very large. You may need to ask the waiter to bring you a take-out container and place half of the meal into it.

That way, you?ve cut out half the calories you were going to eat, and you save money because you don?t have to fix lunch the next day.

A good thing to keep close at hand throughout your fitness journey is a stash of walnuts. Studies have shown that adding walnuts to a breakfast helped participants stay full for longer than people who ate the breakfast without walnuts. Additionally, walnuts are a great snack.

Green tea is a great addition to any nutritional program as it helps you clean you system and eliminate fat that prevents weight loss. Other than water, regular green tea is the best thing to drink in terms of health. Drinking green tea, instead of drinks high in sugar, can help you lose weight.

As this article points out, the most successful weight loss programs are the ones that have a goal and a plan of how to achieve it. By using the tips in this article, you will have the maximum chance of succeeding in your weight loss goals.

Dr. Michael J. Breus: Your Brain on Sleep

There's still a great deal of information about the effects of sleep on the brain that we don't yet understand, so any research that sheds light on this subject is exciting and potentially important. We know that sleep has restorative, cognitively-enhancing effects. We also know the absence of sleep can have detrimental effects on brain function. Recent studies in sleep-brain research have shown:

  • A link between deep sleep and the formation of long-term memories. Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine were able to establish this direct link by manipulating a cluster of cells in the brains of fruit flies. After breeding the flies to sleep on demand, the researchers discovered that with sleep, fruit flies were able to convert new information into long-term memories. Without sleep, the fruit flies were only able to retain new information for a brief period, as short-term knowledge.
  • Chronic insomnia may lead to damage in the brain. Another recent study in the sleep-brain connection revealed that chronic insomnia is associated with loss of grey-matter density in the human brain. Scientists in the Netherlands found a strong correlation between chronic insomnia and a decrease in grey matter in certain regions of the brain. Moreover, they discovered that the more severe the insomnia, the more significant the decrease in grey matter.

In a recent post -- "Can Sleep Help Heal Painful Memories?" -- I wrote about newly published research that showed REM sleep helps the brain to process emotional memories. In this study, people who slept after being exposed to emotionally charged images had a less intense reaction to seeing these images a second time, compared to people who saw the images twice without sleeping between viewings. Measuring brain activity using MRI, researchers observed a quieting of activity in the region of the brain that processes emotions, indicating that during REM sleep the brain is "soothing" itself of stress.

This latest study may provide another important piece of the puzzle as we work to understand how sleep affects our brain chemistry and brain function. This is also one of those studies that answers a question only to raise many more. Does this insight into the role of sleep in processing emotions provide us a glimpse into why we dream? For people who have suffered severe emotional trauma, is the "re-living" of those experiences connected to their sleep, and to the repetitive nightmares that often accompany significant emotional distress?

The implications of these most recent findings could be significant for people with a wide range of conditions. People with:

  • psychiatric disorders

  • who live and work under prolonged, chronic and intense stress

  • who suffer from mood disorders, depression and anxiety

  • post-traumatic stress disorder

All of these and others stand to benefit from a greater understanding of how sleep can help process emotions.

Stress and emotional upheaval are part of everyone's lives at some point, of course, so this news is relevant for every one of us. As science works toward greater knowledge of how sleep works within the brain, let's take this moment to remember just how powerful -- and helpful to your wellbeing, emotionally and physically -- a good night of sleep can be.

Sweet Dreams,

Obamas to host dinner honoring Iraq veterans (AP)

WASHINGTON ? President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama will host a Feb. 29 dinner at the White House honoring members of the armed forces who served in Iraq.

White House spokesman Jay Carney announced the event Monday during his briefing for reporters.

Carney said the dinner will focus on men and women who served in Iraq in combat and non-combat operations since the war began in March of 2003.

American military involvement ended in Iraq in December. Since then there has been a public debate about the lack of fanfare over the return of Iraq veterans. The first major parade for Iraq veterans occurred Jan. 28 in St. Louis, prompting at least 10 other cities around the country to consider similar celebrations.

In Miramonte, Questions Amid A Sense Of Betrayal

LOS ANGELES -- Mr. Berndt's third-grade classroom was up on the second floor, tucked away at the rear of Miramonte Elementary School, its windows looking out onto a playground.

When he locked the door, the classroom became a private sanctum where authorities allege that the 61-year-old teacher spoon-fed his semen to blindfolded children in a bizarre sexual game he documented in photographs.

That room's secluded location may help explain why Mark Berndt's "tasting game," as he called it, wasn't detected sooner. But a crucial question remains: Why didn't the children, and possibly their parents, tell anyone during a period spanning from 2005 to 2010?

"I'm in such shock," Miguel Lopez, father of one of Berndt's former pupils, said this week as he stood outside the school. "How could this happen?"

The answer is far from clear, but may lie partly in Berndt's classroom character and the community of Miramonte itself, where he taught for three decades. As a playful teacher, he won the confidence of children. As an educated man, he earned the respect of parents ? mostly poor Latino immigrants who are often reluctant to complain out of fear of authority and a perception they won't be taken seriously.

Miramonte Elementary strikes an imposing presence in the Florence-Firestone neighborhood, a collection of small bungalows surrounded by chain link fences. The large school is painted bright yellow and blue with murals depicting world leaders and Mayan motifs.

With 1,400 students, it's so overcrowded it operates year-round on a staggered school start date. Over half the children are learning English and all receive free or reduced-price lunches.

Most of the families in this unincorporated section of Los Angeles County ? about six miles south of downtown ? are immigrants from Mexico and Central America ? some illegal ? who eke out livings mowing lawns and working on factory assembly lines.

Spanish is the predominant language here ? burger joints advertise 99-cent tacos, pupuserias sell El Salvador's national food of corn-filled patties, stores display merchandise of used washing machines and plain wooden furniture on the sidewalks as in Guatemala City. It's an insular neighborhood where people come from societies where authority generally isn't questioned and they don't want to make waves in a new place. College-educated school teachers are respected figures for local parents, many of whom have limited education.

That worked in Berndt's favor, said Maria Polanco, who has two children at Miramonte.

"People are afraid to talk. They can't express themselves well, they're illegal," she said. "He took advantage of that. The school officials think we're ignorant. What do we do to be listened to?"

But the arrest of Berndt, who has been charged with 23 counts of lewd acts on children, may have spurred people to speak out. Four days after his arrest, the school was further roiled when a second teacher, Martin Springer, was arrested on suspicion of fondling two girls in his classroom, after students came forward. Additional complaints are coming in about Berndt, as well.

"We think they're safe in school. We send them here," said Maricela Suarez, a mother of three. "To think that this happened ... we cannot trust the teachers anymore."

By most accounts, Berndt, who taught at the school for 32 years, was a well-liked teacher who seemed quirky but harmless.

He dressed as Mickey Mouse, complete with tail and shorts, for the school's Halloween festival, played comical tunes in class and gave out lollipops and popsicles. He loved to teach about nature and kept a collection of exotic Madagascar hissing cockroaches in a classroom fish tank that fascinated boys.

He took children on field trips and spoke to parents in broken Spanish, often nipping out of school to buy tamales from a neighborhood peddler.

Former student Angelica Zuniga, now a high school junior, said she thought of him as an older brother.

"He was one of the most amazing teachers out there," she said. "He loved us and he never did anything disrespectful to me or made me feel uncomfortable."

When he suddenly disappeared from his classroom a year ago, parents were upset, Suarez recalled.

That rapport Berndt cultivated may be the key to why he went unreported for so long, although several students had tried to complain about him decades ago to no avail.

One complaint to school officials in 1990 about his odd hand movements under his desk was treated dismissively, according to two former students who spoke to the Los Angeles Times, while the district attorney declined to prosecute a 1994 complaint that he tried to fondle a girl under her desk.

In recent years, prosecutors allege, he played the "tasting game" during and after class with his own students and sometimes their friends from other classes. Children told investigators that the teacher would lock the door, which teachers often do to avoid interruptions.

Children allegedly were blindfolded and given a spoon filled with a milky-white substance or cookie smeared with it. Berndt took photos of the kids as they chuckled, sometimes giving them a copy to take home, underscoring the supposedly innocent nature of the game and their reward for participating.

In one photo, a child giggles as a 3-inch-long cockroach crawls on his face. In other photos, children laugh with clear tape over their mouths.

Lopez said that when he questioned his son, the boy knew about the game and said it occurred during class, but he did not participate. Kids mentioned it among themselves, but didn't see it as suspicious, he said.

Experts said that the fact that children didn't tell anyone is not unusual. Guessing games are played throughout childhood and blindfolds are donned at pinata parties and other games. If parents heard about the game or saw the photos, they likely dismissed it as a teacher simply amusing the children, especially since the kids weren't bothered by it and it was not overtly sexual.

Pedophiles commonly use such games to determine which kids will trust them the most and who they can act out further with.

"They're really, really good at this and children don't report it," said Mitch Eisen, director of forensic psychology at California State University, Los Angeles. "Children may feel privileged or special to be involved in the games."

The fact that kids seemed be enjoying themselves also initially threw investigators, who were alerted to the photos by a drugstore film processor. Los Angeles sheriff's detective Sgt. Dan Scott recalled that the photos clearly depicted inappropriate behavior for a teacher, but no crime. Investigators pressed on.

"We felt something was wrong here," he said.

Parents, meanwhile, want some kind of assurance that these things won't happen again ? they want classroom cameras and open doors. And Suarez said she has reinforced advice to her daughter about what is proper and improper behavior by adults.

"I told her don't take anything from anyone," she said. "Not even a teacher."

Bayern coach tells players to handle severe cold

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:49 a.m. ET Feb. 3, 2012

MUNICH (AP) -Bayern Munich coach Jupp Heynckes says his players can cope with expected freezing conditions at Hamburger SV in the Bundesliga.

Heynckes says there is "no room" in the calendar to postpone Saturday's game, when temperatures are expected to drop well below freezing as Germany is gripped by a severe cold spell.

The Bayern coach says "you can still play football at minus 15 degrees (5 degrees Fahrenheit)."

Heynckes has urged his players to "close your eyes and get through it. We're men after all."

Brazilian defender Breno will not travel with the squad due to a minor knee problem, and Ukraine midfielder Anatoliy Tymoshchuk is likely to fill in at right back for the suspended Rafinha.

Heynckes says "the squad is there to compensate for the absences."

Big Miracle Video Movie Review

Drew Barrymore and John Krasinski team up to save the whales in Big Miracle, but is the film as heartwarming as it seems? Check out our video movie review to see if this movie is a watch, pass, or rent.

View Transcript Transcript

Hi. I'm Becky Kirsch with Watch, Pass, or Rent, we're looking at Big Miracle. John Krasinski played the reporter who discovers 3 great whales trapped under the ice in the small town in Alaska when it's annual activist girlfriend played by Drew Barrymore gets wind of the situation, the story quickly becomes an international sensation. "Governor Haskell, we were wondering if you coulf mobilize a ship that can break through the ice?" "Are you serious?" This movie does have a lot going for it. You've got a great cast that includes Ted Danson, Kristen Bell, and Dermot Mulroney in addition to John and Drew. And it's set against a gorgeous Alaskan backdrop and it's based on a really heartwarming true story. But, unfortunately, the elements just don't blend together for a compelling film. "Do you have room for two more? Press have to find their own way out there." The movie follows all these different people coming go to save these whales. It was interesting to see how hard it was and how many steps they went through just to set them free. But you don't really feel emotionally invested in the story, and that makes it a little bit boring. There are tons of characters in this movie, but with the exception of John Krazcinski, is you don't get a lot of back story for any of them. Plus it just switches back and between each of them so quickly, that it kind of bogs down the whole story. As all eyes and efforts are focused on saving the whales. "Big Miracle" is a heart warming message and John Krazcinski is very cute, but ultimately it didn't affect me emotionally as much as I think it should have. I'm gonna have to give this one a rent.

Madonna Replacing Eli Manning In Super Bowl Lineup?

Madonna will perform in front of the biggest audience of her career at Sunday's Super Bowl, and admitted it's the most nerve-racking thing she has ever done. But is the queen of pop aware that, before and after her halftime show, there is a football game?

"Yes, I've been told, thank you for reminding me," Madonna said. "I am playing in the game. I am going to be the quarterback ... for the Giants. Aren't they playing?"

It's going to be a busy February for Madonna with the releases of her new album and her directorial debut with the film "W.E.," which centers on the controversial relationship between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII, who abdicated the throne for love.

And although Madonna doesn't expect the reigning Queen of England to have a personal response to her film, she said she does hope everyone at the palace enjoys it.

Officials: Radiation could have escaped nuke plant

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A tiny amount of radiation could have escaped into the atmosphere from a Southern California nuclear power plant after a water leak prompted operators to shut down the reactor as a precaution, officials said Wednesday.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Victor Dricks said radioactive gas "could have" escaped the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station on the northern San Diego coast.

Southern California Edison spokesman Gil Alexander told The Associated Press the amount would have been "extremely small" and possibly not detectable by monitors.

The company and federal regulators say the release would not have posed a safety risk for the public.

"It would have been very, very small, low level, which would not pose a danger to anyone," Dricks said.

The leak occurred in equipment that was installed in the plant in the fall of 2010. The leak occurred in one of thousands of tubes that carry radioactive water from the Unit 3 reactor.

However, the company has found damage to other tubes, Dricks said.

"The damage that they have found to many other tubes is unusual, and they are attempting to identify the reason," Dricks said.

Alexander said he could not confirm any additional damage, pending an inspection of the equipment.

The plant is owned by Southern California Edison, San Diego Gas & Electric and the city of Riverside. Southern California Edison serves nearly 14 million residents with electricity in Central and Southern California.

The San Onofre plant is about 45 miles north of San Diego.

The NRC is evaluating the plant's response to the leak, Dricks said.
