Ship noise makes crabs get crabby

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

A study published today in Biology Letters found that ship noise affects crab metabolism, with largest crabs faring worst, and found little evidence that crabs acclimatise to noise over time.

The team from the Universities of Bristol and Exeter found that crabs exposed to recordings of ship noise showed an increase in metabolic rate, indicating elevated stress. In the real world this could have implications for growth and, if the metabolic cost of noise causes crabs to spend more time foraging to compensate, could also increase the risk of predation.

Researcher Matt Wale from Bristol's School of Biological Sciences describes the study: "We used controlled experiments to consider how shore crabs of different sizes respond to both single and repeated exposure to playback of ship noise. Ship noise is the most common source of noise in the aquatic environment."

Explains Dr Andy Radford, Reader in Behavioural Ecology at Bristol: "We found that the metabolic rate of crabs exposed to ship noise was higher than those experiencing ambient harbour noise, and that larger individuals were affected most strongly. This is the first indication that there might be different responses to noise depending on the size of an individual."

If commercially important crabs and lobsters are affected by noise, these findings have implications for fisheries in busy shipping areas where large individuals may be losing out. Conversely, if reducing noise reduces metabolic costs, then quietening aquaculture facilities may lead to higher yields.

Dr Steve Simpson from the University of Exeter warned: "Since larger crabs are affected more strongly by noise this could have implications for fisheries in noisy areas. Also, many crustacean species, particularly prawns, are grown in aquaculture, so if acoustic disturbance has a metabolic cost then operational noise in farms may impact on growth, and quieter farms may be more profitable."

Pistorius plans his own service for Steenkamp

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius planned a personal memorial service on Tuesday for Reeva Steenkamp, the 29-year-old model he shot at his home on Valentine's Day.

The evening service would be at the Pretoria home of his uncle Arnold, where the Olympic athlete has been staying since he was released on bail awaiting trial on a premeditated murder charge.

Pistorius' reputation management firm said Pistorius had specifically requested the service "as he remains in deep mourning for the loss of his partner Reeva," whom he says he shot by accident assuming an intruder had entered his home on Feb. 14.

"Oscar has asked for a private service with people who share his loss, including his family members who knew and loved Reeva as one of their own," Vuma Reputation Management said in a statement.

Exactly a week ago, a memorial service was held for Steenkamp in the southern coast city of Port Elizabeth, where her body was cremated following a private service.

That same day, the bail hearing for Pistorius started in the nation's capital Pretoria.

It was unclear exactly what Pistorius' service would consist of or how many people would attend.

Prosecutors say the pair had an argument before Steenkamp was killed. Vuma said that Pistorius "continues to grieve" for her. Vuma spokeswoman Janice Hills would not give any further details about the ceremony, saying it is "a private matter for the family."

Chief Magistrate Desmond Nair set bail for Pistorius at 1 million rand ($113,000). The 26-year-old track star was also ordered to hand over his passports, turn in any guns he owns and keep away from his upscale home in a gated community in Pretoria, the scene of the crime.

He cannot leave the district of Pretoria without his probation officer's permission and is not allowed to consume drugs or alcohol.

Nair himself was in private mourning on Tuesday. He confirmed that he is related to a woman suspected of killing her two children and committing suicide on the weekend.

The revelation was the latest twist in the saga of Pistorius and prominent figures linked to the case against the double-amputee athlete.

The bodies of a woman and her two sons were found Sunday evening at their Johannesburg home by her ex-husband, police Warrant Officer Balan Muthan said. Authorities suspect the woman administered a substance that killed her children, and took her own life by ingesting it as well.

"I can confirm the deceased is my first cousin," Nair told The Associated Press in a telephone interview.

The woman's brother, Vishal Maharaj, identified her as Anusha Maharaj. Police said Maharaj was her family name before she married. South African media identified her as Anusha Mooljee.

Muthan said police suspect "she took her own life by ingesting a substance that killed her," and that she "most probably" gave the same substance to her children. Autopsies were conducted Monday and toxicologists were analyzing the substance believed to have killed the three family members.

Suicide notes were found and a murder investigation was underway, Muthan said. He said copies of the notes were admitted as evidence in the probe and declined to comment on the contents.

Eyewitness News, a South African media outlet, said the boys who died were 12 and 17 years old and cited neighbor Claire Osment as saying she rushed outside after hearing screams coming from the townhouse where they lived.

"We asked what happened. The dad just said, 'She has killed my boys.' He was just crying," Eyewitness News quoted her as saying. "He couldn't believe it, he couldn't believe that his sons are gone."

New W3C Group Focuses on Automotive Web Platforms and ...

W3CThe World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), an international community that develops web standards, has announced the launch of the new ?Automotive and Web Platform Business Group? which will create web technology specifications for the automotive industry starting with a Vehicle Data API Specification.

There has been a rush in the creation of connected car applications and as ProgrammableWeb?s Greg Bates recently reported, car companies including Ford, GM, Toyota and BMW are racing to create vehicle-controlled app platforms and marketplaces.

The Automotive and Web Platform Business Group will focus on helping the automotive industry adopt web technologies and platforms as well as understanding W3C web specifications and standards. Specific issues related to the automobile industry will also be addressed such as reduction of driver distractions and driver safety. In the W3C press release, Roger C. Lanctot, Associate Director in the Global Automotive Practice at Strategy Analytics, states that:

?The W3C?s API initiative arrives just as OEMs are laying the groundwork to bring the browser into the car via multiple means. Car makers will be looking to the W3C to help identify best practices for over the air software updates and security and the launch of the new Business Group will provide the ideal forum for those conversations.?

Defining a Vehicle Data API Specification is the first priority of the group and will provide guidelines as to the types of vehicle data that should be accessible using a web API(s). There is a wide range of data that could be made accessible to app developers via web APIs such as vehicle make, model and year, vehicle conditions such as navigation, speed, climate and more. Diana Cheng, Web and Social Media Expert, Internet Standards, R&D at Vodafone Group states for the press release:

?Standardization of a Vehicle API will boost interoperability regardless of manufacturers and enrich automotive applications with vehicle data, which would increase security and user control. We believe the W3C is the right organization to ensure correct design and sandboxing of such an API so that it does not interfere with other vehicle functions; they have already been doing this for years, i.e. standardizing a large number of Web APIs that run securely in the browser?s runtime. We look forward to starting collaboration with other industry players through this business group.?

The concept of ?car as a platform? has actually been around for several years. However, as reported by ProgrammableWeb Editor Adam DuVander, the recent launch of the OnStar API by GM seems to have sparked a ?car as a platform? war. Only time will tell whether the ?car as a platform? will be embraced by developers and ultimately car consumers.

The US Postal Service Could Easily Turn Things Around With Belgian Chocolate-Flavored Stamps

It can't just be the United States Postal Service that's having a hard time staying afloat. Email and social networking is available all around the world, but maybe the USPS should take a hint from the clever Belgians who've created a collection of stamps that celebrate—and actually smell and taste like—chocolate. Outbox Pours Salt On Snail Mail By Launching Its Digitizing Service In San Francisco

outbox ipad and browserMail digitizing startup Outbox is launching in San Francisco today, the first step in what co-founder Will Davis is a broader national rollout. If, like me, you find physical mail to be an annoyance, this is good news. Basically, Outbox swings by your real-world mailbox three times a week, digitizes the content, and makes it accessible on the Web, iPads, and iPhones. That means you're less likely to dump an important document into the recycling bin (hell, my initial, physical Outbox invite ended up in my laundry hamper, and they had to email me another copy), and your desk/kitchen table/whatever doesn't get cluttered with piles of junk mail.

S.Africa's Budget needs to raise revenue to support spending

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South Africa's chronic joblessness is eroding the tax base and swelling the number of dependants on state funds, goading the government to increase revenues and economic growth to cut a budget gap.

In his 3-year budget plan on Wednesday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan will try to reassure bond investors worried about increased issuance, and also appease key ratings agencies who have downgraded South Africa's credit rating.

Economists say Gordhan is unlikely to announce a much wider deficit than October's 4.5 percent projection for 2012/13. The consensus among 14 economists polled by Reuters is for a slight upward revision to 4.7 percent of GDP.

In his State of the Nation address two weeks ago, President Jacob Zuma said government would focus on creating jobs, and reducing poverty and inequality this year.

Violent labour strife in the mining and farming sectors in the last six months, coupled with public protests against a lack of basic services like water and housing, point to rising tensions as social divides persist nearly 20 years after white minority rule ended.

Gordhan could tweak tax policies to increase revenue, while markets will want to see evidence of a clear plan to induce higher economic growth.

TAXES SHRINK ON JOB LOSSES

The Treasury has seen its tax base shrink as the economy loses jobs while the government's social welfare programme, which gives out grants to 16 million people, has been a drag on state coffers.

"The balancing act is becoming harder to maintain with each budget. We have too few taxpayers supporting too many grant recipients. This is simply unsustainable," Ettiene Retief of accounting group SAIPA said.

With the government struggling to make headway in its job creation targets, Zuma said earlier this month Gordhan would be reviewing tax policies to support public spending.

Mining royalties are likely to be the main focus of the review, and Gordhan may increase personal income taxes and value added tax (VAT), which has been capped at 14 percent for two decades.

But likely resistance from powerful labour union and government ally COSATU, could see Gordhan holding off on raising personal taxes until after national elections due in 2014.

The market also wants clarity from Gordhan on a 3-year old plan in which the government would subsidise wages for new entrants to the job market. COSATU has rejected the plan, saying employers could use it to push out long-serving employees while exploiting new workers.

Given South Africa's history of under spending on infrastructure, investors also want to see concrete spending plans for 845 billion randworth of funds put aside last year.

At the same time, Gordhan will want to assure investors that he is committed to prudent spending, following downgrades from Standard & Poor's and Fitch which have left South Africa's sovereign rating just one level above the speculative grade. Moody's rating is two levels above.

While South Africa's debt-to-GDP ratio remains manageable at nearly 40 percent, ratings agencies are looking for the Treasury to reverse the trend of rising public debt.

Helen Hunt opts for H&M on the red carpet

Forget designer: Helen Hunt wore H&M at the Oscars on Feb. 24 in Hollywood, California.

By Rina Raphael, TODAY

Helen Hunt had fashion fans' tongues wagging after the Best Supporting Actress nominee revealed that her midnight-blue Oscars gown was designed by H&M. It's not unheard of that a star would wear an affordable brand on the red carpet (remember Sharon Stone wore The Gap in 1996?), but it still puzzles some folks who can't imagine an A-lister would pass up a chance to go designer. (We're tempted: This is your chance to wear Valentino! VALENTINO!)

Elegant, and affordable: Helen Hunt poses on the Oscars red carpet.

Of course, this isn't your typical H&M. The affordable retailer announced earlier this year that it was releasing a red carpet collection ? an off-shoot of its existing eco-friendly Conscious line. The line has already been worn by stars like Michelle Williams and Viola Davis, and now Hunt, who looks amazing in a silk dress made specially for the Oscar occasion.

What do you think of Hunt's dress? Are you fan?

DEMS Soundly Reject GOP House Version of the VAWA Stripped of LGBT Protections

You Are Here: Home ? Featured, Politics ? DEMS Soundly Reject GOP House Version of the VAWA Stripped of LGBT Protections

Republicans suckDemocrats have soundly rejected the House Republican version of the Violence Against Women Act?after they?removed all new protections for LGBT women.

From the Huffington Post:

The House GOP bill entirely leaves out provisions aimed at helping LGBT victims of domestic violence. Specifically, the bill removes ?sexual orientation? and ?gender identity? from the list of underserved populations who face barriers to accessing victim services, thereby disqualifying LGBT victims from a related grant program. The bill also eliminates ?sexual orientation? and ?gender identity? from the list of groups who may not be denied funding under VAWA

Said Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt who wrote the original version of the bill that included the LGBT protections.

?The Republican House leadership has decided to replace the Senate-passed version with a substitute that will not provide critical protections for rape victims, domestic violence victims, human trafficking victims, students on campuses, or stalking victims. This is simply unacceptable and it further demonstrates that Republicans in the House have not heard the message sent by the American people and reflected in the Senate?s overwhelming vote earlier this month to pass the bipartisan Leahy-Crapo bill.?

Republicans.? Disgusting inhuman?beings the lot of them.

1 in 4 homeowners will remortgage to settle debt

Friday 22nd February 2013

One in four homeowners remortgaging an existing property in January increased the size of their loan to free up capital to pay off other debts or spend elsewhere, according to research from LMS.

?

The property services company surveyed those opting to remortgage at the start of the year, finding that 25 per cent of those questioned would use an extended mortgage to pay off other debts or free up cash to spend.

?

The study also found that, of those increasing their loan amount, two thirds (66 per cent) did so by as much as ?10,000.

?

57 per cent of remortgaging borrowers were able to fund a home improvement by releasing equity in their home, while a further 37 per cent said they would use the extra capital to consolidate their debts.

?

A small number of homeowners also said they planned to use the money to grow their property portfolio (four per cent) or help their children onto the property ladder (three per cent).

?

At the other end of the spectrum nearly two thirds (63 per cent) of respondents were motivated by the potential cash savings on offer by remortgaging; of these, more than one in two (56 per cent) have achieved a monthly saving of up to ?500 and 6 per cent more than ?500.

?

Speaking about the survey?s findings, Andy Knee, Chief Executive of LMS, said: ?Remortgaging homeowners are benefitting from some excellent rates from lenders with many eager to snap up a good deal, be it to reduce the monthly mortgage burden or free up capital to spend elsewhere.

?

?The Funding for Lending Scheme will help to increase competition in the remortgage market over the next few months and we expect to see many more homeowners seizing the opportunity to make, what is in many cases, a substantial monetary saving.?

Poll: President's approval declines, governor's grows

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -

A new University of North Florida poll reveals that President Barack Obama's approval ratings have dropped since March among Duval County residents, from 47 percent to 43 percent.

Contrarily, Gov. Rick Scott's approval ratings have improved since then, with a 6 percent increase to a 51 percent approval rating.

Reducing crime was third on the list of priorities for the adult Duval County residents who were polled, with 13 percent of the respondents believing that it was a top priority, after improving the economy/creating jobs and improving the quality of public education.

In conjunction with these findings, 52 percent of Jacksonville residents were either somewhat or very fearful of becoming victims of crime, compared to 49 percent in March. Regardless of this finding, the Jacksonville Sherriff's Office still received a high approval rating of 71 percent, similar to the 72 percent approval it received last March.

Despite a majority of respondents replying that they were fearful of becoming a victim of crime, the polls reveal that only 40 percent of the respondents, or people in their household, owned a gun, in contrast with the 52 percent who didn't own a gun. Six percent of the respondents either didn't know or declined to answer.

The survey was conducted through the use of a 27-station telephone-polling laboratory at UNF. A polling sample was selected through the use of Random-Digit-Dialing methodology. A cellphone sample and an overlay sample were used to increase representation. Age, gender, race and party registration were weighted to the 2010 U.S. Census, as well as to statistics from the Supervisor of Elections for Duval County registered voters.

The survey was conducted between Feb. 4 and Feb. 12, and includes 917 residents (+/- 3.23 percent) in Duval County. About 210 UNF political science students participated in the data collection.

La Roche women?s basketball again aiming for NCAA tournament

Clairton native Kamela Gissendanner guided the La Roche women's basketball team to a 22-2 record and the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season title with a 17-1 conference record in her first season as coach.

By Chris Adamski

Published: Friday, February 22, 2013, 1:51?a.m.
Updated 3 hours ago

Six months into her tenure as a first-time head coach, Clairton native Kamela Gissendanner has some advice.

?You're never ready to be a head coach,? she said, ?until you've been a head coach.?

Apparently, Gissendanner was born ready. At least if early success is any indication.

The La Roche College women's team completed its regular season 22-2 and won the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference regular-season title with a 17-1 record. The Redhawks will be the No. 1 seed in the AMCC tournament, which begins Tuesday.

All this despite not accepting the position until mid-August. And being only 27 years old. And having a significantly short-handed roster compared to her team's rivals.

?Most teams that are successful, they have a 12- to 15-man roster. We've been doing this with seven or eight girls game in and game out, which is pretty unheard of,? Gissendanner said. ?So that's why it's been a little difficult for us.

?I'm happy but not satisfied yet. That's how I feel right now. We have a lot to look forward to still.?

La Roche's roster size ? because of recruiting ? was affected by the late coaching change. The Redhawks also have lost players since preseason practice began for a variety of reasons.

But being undermanned hasn't meant being uncompetitive.

?We're very happy with the way this season's gone,? said guard/forward Amanda Garland, a Woodland Hills graduate. ?It's a lot different from years past when we'd have almost 20 girls, but that's meant in practice we're moving the whole time. And so when it comes to the game, nobody gets tired.?

Gissendanner took over the Redhawks program after serving as an assistant at St. Francis (Pa.) from 2009-11. That followed a playing career that included professional stops with the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA and pro teams in Norway and Slovakia.

She also was a decorated player in high school and in college at Penn State.

That depth and breadth of experience doesn't always translate into head coaching success. But, in the case of Gissendanner, the early returns suggest otherwise.

?She's a lot of fun,? Garland said. ?There's a lot of bonding on the team that goes on because of her, and we relate to her well.

?She doesn't accept failure. As the coach, she wants everybody to know she's not going to let up on us. She always expects the best from us.?

Gissendanner expects the best out of herself and her program. Take her philosophy on recruiting at the NCAA Division III school: ?We want to have good players who are recognized not only regionally but nationally. And that is honestly my goal for the program, year in and year out.?

?We're trying to recruit heavily,? she said. ?We'll have a couple surprise guests on our roster next year whom people will enjoy watching them play.?

The Redhawks have that kind of talent already this year, including three players from the Mon Valley. A junior guard/forward, Garland is tied for third in scoring (11.7 points per game) and is second in rebounds (4.8).

Junior forward Jessica Pitts, a West Mifflin graduate and Duquesne native, is second in points (15.2) and the team leader in rebounds (11.0) and assists (5.6). Steel Valley alumnus Leslie McPherson, a junior guard, is second on the team in assists (4.0) and averages 7.7 points per contest.

Add in talents such as junior Casie Cygan and sophomore LaShauna Brothers, and Gissendanner is thinking big in how she wants to cap her inaugural season.

?At La Roche, they're used to being good,? Gissendanner said. ?So this isn't anything new for them. Obviously the past two years they've gotten to the NCAA tournament.

?Our goal is to make a lot more noise this year once we actually get into the tournament.?

Jobs, factory, inflation data favor easy Fed policy

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A raft of U.S. economic data on Thursday from claims for jobless aid to factory activity and consumer prices pointed to a still tepid recovery and supported the argument for the Federal Reserve to maintain its monetary stimulus.

The Fed is currently buying $85 billion in bonds per month and has said it would keep up purchases until the labor market outlook improves substantially, although officials are increasingly divided over the wisdom of that course.

"The economy is in a holding pattern. It's not going to strengthen sufficiently to justify an end of the current program," said Millan Mulraine, senior economist at TD Securities in New York.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits increased 20,000 last week to a seasonally adjusted 362,000, unwinding the bulk of the prior week's decline, the Labor Department said.

A second report from the department showed consumer prices were flat for a second straight month in January as gasoline prices fell and the cost of food held steady.

In the 12 months through January, consumer prices rose 1.6 percent, the smallest gain since July, suggesting there was little inflation pressure to worry the Fed.

Concerns over tepid job growth prompted the U.S. central bank last year to embark on its open-ended bond buying program.

However, minutes of the Fed's January 29-30 policy meeting published on Wednesday showed some policymakers feel the central bank may have to slow or stop the asset purchases before it sees an acceleration in job growth because of concerns over the financial risks of the program.

MANUFACTURING SLOWING

News on the manufacturing sector, which has supported the economy's recovery from the 2007-09 recession, was downbeat.

The Philadelphia Fed's business activity index dropped to minus 12.5 in February, the lowest level since June. The index, which measures factory activity in the mid-Atlantic region, had fallen to minus 5.8 in January.

A reading below zero indicates contraction in the region's manufacturing sector. The survey covers factories in eastern Pennsylvania, southern New Jersey and Delaware.

Another report from financial data firm Markit that tries to gauge overall national factory activity showed manufacturing growth slowed in February but remained near a nine-month peak.

"We believe manufacturing activity will continue to expand early in 2013," said Daniel Silver, an economist at JPMorgan in New York.

Stocks on Wall Street were trading lower on the factory and claims data, and signs of weakness in the euro zone, while U.S. Treasury debt prices rose. The U.S. dollar advanced against a basket of currencies.

The U.S. economy braked sharply in the fourth quarter, but grew at a 2.2 percent clip for the full year. Output is being hampered by lackluster demand as employment struggles to gain traction.

Job growth has been far less than the at least 250,000 per month over a sustained period that economists say is needed to significantly reduce the ranks of unemployed. The unemployment rate rose 0.1 percentage point to 7.9 percent in January.

Last week's claims data covered the survey period for the government's closely watched monthly tally of nonfarm jobs. Claims were up 27,000 between the January and February survey periods.

However, the increase probably does not suggest any material change in the pace of job growth given that claims have been very volatile since January because of difficulties smoothing the data for seasonal fluctuations.

Despite the weak factory and jobs data, there is reason for optimism about the economy. The housing market recovery is gaining momentum.

A report from the National Association of Realtors showed existing home sales rose 0.4 percent last month, pushing the supply of homes on the market to a 13-year low. The median home price rose 12.3 percent from a year-ago.

Rising home values should help to support consumer spending.

Although consumer prices excluding food and energy rose 0.3 percent - the largest gain since May 2011 - most of that reflected outsized increases in apparel and education costs.

"January is a tough month because you get a lot of price hikes at the start of the new year and the seasonals have a hard time sort of adjusting," said Omair Sharif, an economist at RBS in Stamford, Connecticut.

"I don't expect the core CPI to maintain that pace of increase in the near-term."

Egypt's Brotherhood still operates secretively

CAIRO (AP) ? Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi says he has firsthand knowledge of opponents allegedly plotting against him at a meeting.

A few months earlier, the most powerful man in his Muslim Brotherhood group, Khairat el-Shater, said he had access to recordings of former military rulers and electoral officials engineering his disqualification from last year's presidential race.

In Egypt, those statements are seen by security officials, former members of the Islamist group and independent media as strong hints that the Brotherhood might be running its own intelligence-gathering network outside of government security agencies and official channels.

Such concerns dovetail the Brotherhood, which has a long history of operating clandestinely, to suspicion that it remains a shadowy group with operations that may overlap with the normal functions of a state.

Brotherhood supporters also demonstrated militia-like capabilities at anti-Morsi protests in December.

Another oft-heard charge comes from the Foreign Ministry, where officials complain that the president relies more on trusted Brotherhood advisers than those inside the ministry in formulating foreign policy.

The Brotherhood emerged from Egypt's 2011 uprising as the country's dominant political group and Morsi was elected president in June of last year as the group's candidate.

The motive for setting up parallel operations could be rooted in the fact that many government bodies, such as security agencies and the judiciary, are still dominated by appointees of the ousted regime of longtime authoritarian leader Hosni Mubarak or anti-Islamists with long-held suspicions of the Brotherhood.

The perception that such agencies are hostile to the country's new Islamist leaders lends their rule an embattled aspect despite a string of electoral victories.

"The problem with the Brotherhood is that they came to power but are still dealing with the nation as they did when they were in the opposition," said Abdel-Jalil el-Sharnoubi, former editor-in-chief of the group's website who left the Brotherhood in May 2011.

"Because they cannot trust the state, they have created their own," he added.

The notion of a state within a state has precedents elsewhere in the Arab world. In Lebanon, the Iranian-backed Shiite Hezbollah is the de facto government in much of the south and east of the country and has its own army and telephone network.

To a lesser extent, followers of Iraq's anti-American Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr are de facto administrators of Shiite districts in Baghdad and in parts of the mostly Shiite south.

In Egypt, the situation reflects a chasm that has emerged since the uprising over the nation's future. In one camp is the Brotherhood, their Islamist allies and a fairly large segment of the population that is conservative and passively inclined toward the ideas of Islam as a way of life.

Arrayed against them is a bloc of comparable size that includes not only those who served under Mubarak in the state and security structures but also moderate Muslims, liberals, secularists, women and Christians who account for about 10 percent of the population.

The Brotherhood denies that any of its activities are illegal or amount to a state within a state.

"The Brotherhood is targeted by a defamation campaign, but will always protect its reputation and these immoral battles will never change that," said spokesman Ahmed Aref, alluding to claims that the group was running a parallel state.

"There is still an elite in Egypt that remains captive to Mubarak's own view of the Brotherhood," he added.

For most of the 85 years since its inception, the Brotherhood operated secretively as an outlawed group, working underground and often repressed by governments.

But even after its political success, the group is still suspected of secretive operations.

The Brotherhood counters that it has legitimacy on its side, having consistently won at the ballot box since Mubarak's ouster. And they accuse the opposition of conspiring with former regime members in an attempt to overthrow a democratically elected administration.

The two most powerful Brotherhood figures, wealthy businessman el-Shater and spiritual leader Mohamed Badie, are seen by many in Egypt as the real source of power ? wielding massive influence over Morsi and his government.

El-Shater, according to the former Brotherhood members and security officials, is suspected of running an information gathering operation capable of eavesdropping on telephones and email.

He was the Brotherhood's first choice for presidential candidate in last year's election but was disqualified over a Mubarak-era conviction.

Following his disqualification, he publicly said last summer that he had access to recordings of telephone conversations between members of the election commission and the military council that ruled Egypt for nearly 17 months after Mubarak's ouster.

The conversations, he claimed, were to engineer throwing him out of the race. He did not say how he knew of the contacts or their contents.

Again in December, he suggested that he had access to information gathered clandestinely.

Addressing Islamists in a televised meeting, he said he has "detected from various sources" that there were meetings of people allegedly plotting to destabilize Morsi's rule.

He did not identify the alleged plotters nor say how he had learned of the meetings.

A spokesman for the Brotherhood's political arm, the Freedom and Justice Party, said at the time when asked for comment that it was to be expected from a group as big as the Brotherhood to have its own "resources." That was taken as virtual confirmation of a parallel intelligence gathering operation.

Morsi was also seen as suggesting that the Brotherhood was spying on critics when he spoke to supporters outside his presidential palace in November. He said he had firsthand knowledge of what transpired in a meeting of several of his critics.

"They think that they can hide away from me," he said.

The words of El-Shater and Morsi were taken as strong hints that the Brotherhood has its own intelligence gathering operation. But in a country fed on a steady diet of conspiracy theories, no hard evidence has come to light, only suspicion and talk.

A former Brotherhood member, Mohammed el-Gebbah, claimed the group had six "mini intelligence centers," including one housed in its headquarters in the Cairo district of Moqqatam.

He did not provide evidence to back his claim and another Brotherhood spokesman, Murad Ali, denied that the group has such capability.

In an off-the-cuff remark, Brotherhood stalwart Essam el-Aryan said last October that Morsi's presidential palace secretly records all "incoming and outgoing communications." The president's spokesman swiftly denied it.

But it only fed the notion of a Brotherhood parallel intelligence gathering operation with Morsi's support and cooperation.

Another concern that has arisen is whether the Brotherhood might be running its own militias outside of government security agencies.

That fear arose from a wave of mass protests that turned violent in December. Protesters for and against Morsi faced off over decrees, since rescinded, that gave the president near absolute powers.

In early December, the Brotherhood posted a "general alert" on its official Facebook page and the next day, groups of armed Brotherhood supporters attacked opposition protesters staging a sit-in outside Morsi's palace.

Thousands of Morsi supporters and opponents poured into the area and street fighting continued well into the night.

Video clips later posted on social networks showed Brotherhood supporters stripping and torturing protesters in makeshift "detention centers" set up just outside the palace gates, partly to extract confessions that they were on the opposition's payroll.

On-camera testimonies by victims to rights groups spoke of police and palace workers standing by and watching as they were being abused by Brotherhood supporters.

At least 10 people were killed and 700 injured in the clashes on Dec. 5.

The next morning, groups of Morsi supporters staged military-style drills in residential areas near the palace.

Ali, the group's spokesman, denied the existence of any kind of militias.

"We have no military or non-military formations. None whatsoever," he said.

Aref, the other spokesman, disputed the version of events outside Morsi's palace on Dec. 5, saying 11 of the group's supporters were killed by thugs and nearly 1,500 injured, including 132 who were shot.

"The facts of that day were turned upside down to mislead public opinion and the victims became the culprit," he said.

Drew Peterson gets 38 years in third wife's murder

JOLIET, Ill. (AP) ? Drew Peterson ? the swaggering former suburban Chicago police officer who gained notoriety after his much-younger fourth wife vanished in 2007 ? was sentenced to 38 years in prison on Thursday for murdering his third wife.

Illinois does not have the death penalty, and the 59-year-old Peterson had faced a maximum 60-year prison term. The judge gave him four years' credit for time he has served since his arrest.

Jurors convicted Peterson in September in Kathleen Savio's 2004 death. Neighbors found the 40-year-old's body in a dry bathtub at home with a gash on her head ? her hair soaked in blood.

Peterson is also a suspect in the disappearance of Stacy Peterson ? who was 23-years-old when she vanished ? but he hasn't been charged in her case. It was her disappearance that led authorities to take another look at Savio's death and eventually reclassify it from an accident to a homicide.

Fascination nationwide with Peterson arose from speculation he sought to use his law enforcement expertise to get away with murder.

Peterson shocked the courtroom during his sentencing hearing by shouting, "I did not kill Kathleen!" as he made a statement to the court.

Someone in the court audience responded by shouting back, "Yes, you did," and the person was then removed from the room.

Earlier Thursday, Judge Edward Burmila denied a defense request to grant Peterson a retrial. Peterson's current attorneys contended his former lead attorney, Joel Brodsky, botched the initial trial.

Brodsky stepped down from the defense team in November, as his quarrel with Peterson's current lawyers worsened.

Steve Greenberg was on the trial team and still represents Peterson. Greenberg says Brodsky forced Peterson to take part in a damaging pretrial media blitz and that it was Brodsky's decision to call a witness whose testimony ended up backfiring on the defense.

Brodsky has called allegations from his former colleagues "a bald-faced lie" and insisted the entire legal team agreed on trial strategy.

A turning point at the trial came when the defense called a divorce attorney who said he spoke to Stacy Peterson before she vanished. Rather than blunting her credibility, the witness stressed to jurors that Stacy Peterson seemed to truly believe her husband killed Savio.

Before his 2009 arrest, the glib, cocky Drew Peterson seemed to taunt authorities, suggesting a "Win a Date With Drew Contest" and then, after his arrest, "Win a Conjugal Visit With Drew Contest." More recently, his story inspired a TV movie starring Rob Lowe.

The case began with a gruesome discovery. A neighbor came across Savio's body March 1, 2004. She was face down in her dry bathtub, her thick, black hair soaked in blood and a 2-inch gash was on the back of her head.

The death of the aspiring nurse was initially deemed an accident. After Stacy Peterson vanished in 2007, Savio's body was exhumed and re-examined.

Drew Peterson had divorced Savio a year before her death. His motive for killing her, prosecutors said, was fear that a pending settlement would wipe him out financially.

Peterson's personality loomed large over his 2012 trial, illustrated by crowds of bystanders gathered outside the courthouse in a circuslike atmosphere after his conviction last year, cheering as prosecutors walked by and shouting, "Loser. Loser. Loser," at defense attorneys.

The verdict was a vindication for Will County State's Attorney James Glasgow and his team, who gambled by putting on a case they conceded was filled with holes.

Prosecutors suspect Peterson killed his sandy-haired fourth wife because she could finger him for Savio's death, but her body has never been found and no charges have ever been filed. Jurors weren't supposed to link her disappearance to Savio's death, and prosecutors were prohibited from mentioning the subject.

Peterson has maintained his fourth wife ran off with another man and is still alive.

Prosecutors faced enormous hurdles as they tried Peterson for Savio's death.

They had no physical evidence tying him to her death and no witnesses placing him at the scene. They were forced to rely on typically barred hearsay ? statements Savio made to others before she died and that Stacy Peterson made before she vanished. Illinois passed a hearsay law in 2008 tailored to Peterson's case, dubbed "Drew's Law," which assisted in making some the evidence admissible at Peterson's trial.

The hearsay ? any information reported by a witness not based on the witness' direct knowledge ? included a friend testifying that Savio told her Peterson once put a knife to her throat and warned her, "I could kill you and make it look like an accident."

Peterson's attorneys have said they might appeal all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court on grounds the hearsay law is unconstitutional.

GOP's Bielat pulls name out of US Senate campaign

BOSTON (AP) -- Republican Sean Bielat has pulled out of the state's special Senate election after making an appeal for campaign contributions over the weekend.

Bielat said Wednesday that while he thought he could have mounted a strong campaign, the time isn't right.

Bielat had filed a statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission and sought donations over the weekend.

In his online appeal Bielat said he was launching his campaign to replace John Kerry, who stepped down to become secretary of state.

Bielat said he needed to raise $150,000 by midnight Tuesday to help collect the 10,000 signatures needed to get on the primary ballot. The signature deadline is next Wednesday.

Daniel Winslow and Gabriel Gomez have already announced they are running on the GOP side. Former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan is weighing a run.

Insert Coin: HeatMeter wants to save your money and the planet (video)

DNP Insert Coin HeatMeter wants to monitor your hearing, save your money and the planet video

Back in 2011, MIT discovered that the Fisker Karma's batteries only lost 10 percent of their battery life after 1,500 charges. Admittedly, the study didn't examine the EV's reliability, nor its tendency to spontaneously combust, but the MIT researchers did learn plenty about energy conservation in the process. Fast-forward to now, and YShape, a start-up spun off from that original research, is taking to Kickstarter to fund HeatMeter, a sensor that's designed to measure the efficiency of fuel-based boilers.

While electricity usage meters are ten-a-penny, it isn't so easy to find equivalents for gas, propane or oil-powered units. By measuring the vibrations in its casing, HeatMeter can tell you exactly how much energy has been used. Combine that data with your home size and average bill cost, and it'll work out what you're spending and how to use less. YShape, led by Radu Gogoana, needs $60,000 for the initial production run -- and will offer you a discounted unit if you kick in $129 -- or lifetime upgrades and support if you make it $149. Not convinced? Head on past the break for the video pitch.
