Sony wants to upgrade the point-and-shoot with new Cyber-shot lineup (Digital Trends)

DSC-TX200Today Sony launched three new pocket cams, despite the decreasing interest in this sector. Next-generation digital cameras (Micro four thirds and other non-traditional interchangeable lens system devices) coupled with the effects of full-frame DSLRs and smartphones have eroded the entry-level point-and-shoot market significantly.

And Sony addressed that. The manufacturer is aware that this segment is struggling and has more to compete with than ever before: consumers are getting better and better with cameras and want more and more out of them. Even still, the point-and-shoot gets replaced on a fairly consistent basis, and the remaining buyers who want these devices are willing to pay for them.

To this end, Sony is doing a few things to squeeze what it can out of the pocket cam market while it can. Three new cameras that Sony has announced pack in the megapixels and improved sensors, without skyrocketing the prices.

In a product call Sony acknowledged that the megapixel war has been waged, and at the end of it we all have begun to accept that more megapixels doesn?t always mean better. But it?s something that consumers still look for in a camera that can sway a decision, so it?s been something Sony outfitted its new releases with. Bright LCDs, decreased noise, and improved sensor type mean you?re not just buying a megapixel number attached to a below-average device. And that?s what Sony will leverage against the onslaught of the camera phone. A few specs on the new releases:

Cyber-shot TX200V

DSC-TX200V
  • 18.2-megapixel CMOS sensor
  • Fast AF ? approximately 0.13 in daylight, 0.25 in low light
  • 3.3-inch OLED wide touchscreen
  • Waterproof, dustproof, freeze-proof
  • Dual record feature (take 13-megapixel stills while shooting full HD 1080p video)
  • Nine creative filters
  • $500; available in March

Cyber-shot WX70

DSC-WX70
  • 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor
  • 3-inch LCD touch screen
  • 5x optical zoom
  • Dual record feature
  • Nine creative filters
  • $230; available in March

Cyber-shot WX50

DSC-WX50
  • 16.2-megapixel CMOS sensor
  • 2.7-inch LCD screen
  • 5x optical zoom
  • Dual record feature
  • Nine creative filters
  • $200; available in March
You?ll notice a few things about the new lineup. The sub $200 point-and-shoot market, while it still exists, is becoming less and less of a priority. And in our opinion, that?s a good thing: your smartphone can accomplish enough that an often-replaced, easily damaged or broken camera with a disappointing battery life will quickly become a nuisance you barely use.

We?d rather see camera-makers offering fewer, more capable cameras instead of making sure they run the price-point gamut. Sony?s clearly taking a page from this book. The new Cyber-shot models do things smartphones cannot do (yet) without completely isolating buyers still stuck on point-and-shoots. It might be a dying device, but there?s some life there yet.?

Iran "very optimistic" on nuclear experts' visit (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran said on Sunday it was very optimistic over a visit by U.N. nuclear inspectors aimed at shedding light on suspected military aspects of Tehran's atomic work but suggested Tehran would curb cooperation if the experts became a "tool" for outside powers.

An International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) team began a three-day visit on Sunday to try to advance efforts to resolve a row about nuclear work which Iran says is for making electricity but the West suspects is aimed at seeking a nuclear weapon.

Tensions with the West rose this month when Washington and the European Union imposed the toughest sanctions yet in a drive to force Tehran to provide more information on its nuclear program. The measures take direct aim at the ability of OPEC's second biggest oil exporter to sell its crude.

The Mehr news agency quoted Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi as saying during a trip to Ethiopia: "We are very optimistic about the outcome of the IAEA delegation's visit to Iran ... Their questions will be answered during this visit,"

"We have nothing to hide and Iran has no clandestine (nuclear) activities."

Iran's parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, warned the IAEA team to carry out a "logical, professional and technical" job or suffer the consequences.

"This visit is a test for the IAEA. The route for further cooperation will be open if the team carries out its duties professionally," said , state media reported.

"Otherwise, if the IAEA turns into a tool (for major powers to pressure Iran), then Iran will have no choice but to consider a new framework in its ties with the agency."

Iran's parliament in the past has approved bills to oblige the government to review its level of cooperation with the IAEA. However, Iran's top officials have always underlined the importance of preserving ties with the watchdog body.

Before departing from Vienna, IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts hoped for the Islamic state to tackle the watchdog's concerns "regarding the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program".

PARLIAMENT DEBATE

Less than one week after the EU's 27 member states agreed to stop importing crude from Iran from July 1, Iranian lawmakers were due to debate a bill later on Sunday that would cut off oil supplies to the EU in a matter of days.

Some parliamentarians told Reuters that the debate might be postponed to Wednesday.

By turning the sanctions back on the EU, lawmakers hope to deny the bloc a six-month window it had planned to give those of its members most dependent on Iranian oil - including some of the most economically fragile in southern Europe - to adapt.

The head of the state-run National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) said late on Saturday that the export embargo would hit European refiners, such as Italy's Eni, that are owed oil from Iran as part of long-standing buy-back contracts under which they take payment for past oilfield projects in crude.

"The decision must be made at high echelons of power and we at the NIOC will act as the executioner of the policies of the government," Ahmad Qalebani told the ISNA news agency.

"The European companies will have to abide by the provisions of the buyback contracts," he said. "If they act otherwise, they will be the parties to incur the relevant losses and will subject the repatriation of their capital to problems."

"Generally, the parties to incur damage from the EU's recent decision will be European companies with pending contracts with Iran."

Italy's Eni is owed $1.4-1.5 billion in oil for contracts it executed in Iran in 2000 and 2001 and has been assured by EU policymakers its buyback contracts will not be part of the European embargo, but the prospect of Iran acting first may put that into doubt.

Eni declined to comment on Saturday.

The EU accounted for 25 percent of Iranian crude oil sales in the third quarter of 2011. However, analysts say the global oil market will not be overly disrupted if parliament votes for the bill that would turn off the oil tap for Europe.

"The Saudis have made it clear that they'll step in to fill the void," said Robert Smith, a consultant at Facts Global Energy.

"It would not pose any serious threat to oil market stability. Meanwhile Asians, predominantly the Chinese and Indians, stand to benefit from more Iranian crude flowing east and at potential discounts."

Potentially more disruptive to the world oil market and global security is the risk of Iran's standoff with the West escalating into military conflict.

Iran has repeatedly said it could close the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane if sanctions succeed in preventing it from exporting crude, a move Washington said it would not tolerate.

"CONSTRUCTIVE SPIRIT"

The IAEA's visit may be an opportunity to defuse some of the tension. Director General Yukiya Amano has called on Iran to show a "constructive spirit" and Tehran has said it is willing to discuss "any issues" of interest to the U.N. agency, including the military-linked concerns.

But Western diplomats, who have often accused Iran of using such offers of dialogue as a stalling tactic while it presses ahead with its nuclear program, say they doubt Tehran will show the kind of concrete cooperation the IAEA wants.

They say Iran may offer limited concessions and transparency to try to ease intensifying international pressure, but that this is unlikely to amount to the full cooperation required.

The outcome could determine whether Iran will face further international isolation or whether there are prospects for resuming wider talks between Tehran and the major powers on the nuclear dispute.

Salehi said Iran "soon" would write a letter to the E.U.'s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to discuss "a date and venue" for fresh nuclear talks.

"Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili in this letter, which may be sent in the coming days, also may mention other issues as well," Salehi said, without elaborating.

The last round of talks in January 2011 between Jalili and Ashton, who represents major powers, failed over Iran's refusal to halt its sensitive nuclear work.

"The talks will be successful as the other party seems interested in finding a way out of this deadlock," Salehi said.

Three dead, over 100 hurt, in Bangladesh violence (Reuters)

DHAKA (Reuters) ? Three people were killed and more than 100 injured on Sunday in clashes between Bangladeshi police and activists of the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) trying to stage anti-government protests in defiance of a ban, witnesses said.

Two people were killed in Chandpur, southeast of the capital and another in a town further south as thousands of BNP workers took to the streets, chanting demands for the ouster of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government, witnesses said.

Mohammad Shahidullah, police superintendent of Chandpur, confirmed the two deaths there, at least one by gunshots.

"The situation is now under control but still very tense," he said by telephone.

Police on Saturday banned proposed demonstrations in the capital and other main cities by the BNP and its allies because of fear of violence, which intensified after Hasina's Awami League also called for a rally in the capital, Dhaka, on Sunday.

The two parties, which have been fierce rivals for years and will face off again in an election due next year, both announced plans for demonstrations on Monday.

"We are bracing for a tougher time ahead," said senior Dhaka police officer Benazir Ahmed.

Ahmed said security forces were also determined to thwart attempts by Islamist radicals to disrupt the peace.

The military said a coup attempt in December was mounted by serving and former army officers who have links with radical Islamists.

Scattered investing, scattered results | Finance Explained

In Alberta, a couple we?ll call Wilt, 36, and his wife, Susan, 44, are thriving with a total take-home income of $ 8,000 a month. Both self-employed as consultants ? he in management, she in health care ? they have come to a point in their lives in which they have a good deal of unencumbered cash flow. Their net worth, about $ 229,000, is modest, but they are planning far ahead. Their goals ? educate their five-year-old daughter and plan a retirement.

Family Finance asked Lenore Davis, a registered financial planner with Dixon, Davis & Co. in Victoria, to work with Wilt and Susan. ?They are scattered in terms of where they deploy their money,? Ms. Davis says. ?They do indeed need a plan to get them to their retirement goal while looking after their daughter?s educational needs.?

Financial management

For now, Susan and Wilt need to reduce their debts and to rationalize their investments. To do that, they have to resist the urge to increase their personal spending parallel to their increased income. Their method has been to run all their income through their personal corporation and pay themselves as needed. Their $ 8,000 monthly draw leaves $ 983 a month unspent. They can use it for their child?s RESP ? $ 2,500 a year, which will attract $ 500 a year from the Canada Educational Savings Grant ? and putting $ 8,000 into lump-sum mortgage reduction on each anniversary due date.

After taking their draws from their corporation and allowing for deductions, there should be $ 60,000 in their company each year to be invested. The money can be left inside the company or flowed out to Wilt and Susan so that they can invest it personally.

Corporate income tax rates ? federal and provincial ? on active Alberta small-business income are low at 14%, compared to personal income tax rates in their bracket of 32% on salaries. But investment income from money left in a corporation is taxed at 45%. So the best thing for now is to distribute the income to the couple as dividends, Ms. Davis advises. In time, they should consider adding to salary to boost Canada Pension Plan benefits, she adds. Dividends are not salary or wage income and do not generate CPP credits.

Any payouts of surplus cash can be used for RESPs, mortgage paydowns, TFSA contributions or filling RRSP space. Wilt has $ 67,000 of unused RRSP space, Susan $ 86,000 of space.

Retirement planning

In 29 years, when they are ready to retire, if they have built up CPP benefits at the maximum rate, currently $ 11,840 a year, they can add their entitlement to full Old Age Security benefits, currently $ 6,480 a year, to build a base of public pensions of $ 36,640 a year in 2012 dollars. Their present spending net of school tuition, saving and debt repayment, about $ 4,000 a month, or $ 48,000 a year after tax, would be approximately $ 74,000 before 35% average tax.

To achieve that level of income, they would have to add $ 37,360 of annual investment income. At 65, when Wilt and Susan begin their retirement, they would need capital of $ 622,700. That would produce the required annual supplement to public pensions, assuming all their income and capital would be used up by the time Wilt is 90. To get to that level of capital, they will have to save $ 11,220 a year for the next 29 years and achieve a 3.0% real rate of return.

The couple already saves more than $ 14,000 a year in RRSPs and taxable savings, so reaching the target should be no problem. Yet Wilt and Susan have shown a knack for investing in risky undertakings with sad outcomes. For example, they have $ 100,000 in a real-estate venture that has gone into receivership. The couple needs to switch investment methods from the concept of adventure to a steady system for diversifying assets and estimating dependable returns from stocks, bonds and perhaps real-estate mutual funds or exchange-traded funds that have strong and rising payouts. Their allocation to bonds should grow to perhaps 25% of total investments within the next few years and rise to 65% by retirement age, Ms. Davis suggests.

Investing in security

The final issue in Wilt and Susan?s future is their view of the purpose of investments. When they had little money, they invested for the thrill of it. Now that they have substantial incomes and substantial assets, they must act like good managers for themselves and for their child.

To avoid the risk of buying the wrong stock or bond, commodity or parcel of real estate, the couple can use low-fee exchange-traded funds with diversified assets. Over a period of 29 years, ETF fees that would average about 0.50% a year will tend to outperform actively managed mutual funds with fees five times higher. The 2.0% annual saving will translate into a 58% value retention over 29 years. Competent managers of higher-fee mutual funds could boost returns and justify their fees, but the odds of finding mangers who can beat the market for nearly three decades are poor.

Wilt and Susan could increase their financial security by purchasing disability insurance. Disability coverage prices vary widely. For payments of $ 5,000 a person a month that begin 90 days after a reported injury or illness, Wilt would pay $ 125 a month to age 65 and Susan would pay $ 243 a month to age 65. The premiums could be paid by their company as a taxable benefit to the employees.

?This couple is in a great place to make their financial situation secure,? Ms. Davis says. ?By taking concrete money-management measures, they can stop worrying about past losses and focus on a comfortable future lifestyle and a solid retirement plan. A relatively small amount of planning and a move to a sound investment style with reasonable costs should get them to a comfortable retirement.?

Actress' claim to be gay by choice riles activists

Gay rights activists say actress Cynthia Nixon's insistence she chose to be a lesbian gives fodder to those who argue gays don't deserve marriage rights. (AP Photo/Peter Kramer, file)

(AP) ? Cynthia Nixon learned the hard way this week that when it comes to gay civil rights, the personal is always political. Very political.

The actress best known for portraying fiery lawyer Miranda Hobbes on "Sex and the City" is up to her perfectly arched eyebrows in controversy since The New York Times Magazine published a profile in which she was quoted as saying that for her, being gay was a conscious choice. Nixon is engaged to a woman with whom she has been in a relationship for eight years. Before that, she spent 15 years and had two children with a man.

"I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me," Nixon said while recounting some of the flak gay rights activists previously had given her for treading in similar territory. "A certain section of our community is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice, because if it's a choice, then we could opt out. I say it doesn't matter if we flew here or we swam here, it matters that we are here and we are one group and let us stop trying to make a litmus test for who is considered gay and who is not."

To say that a certain segment of the gay community "is very concerned that it not be seen as a choice" is an understatement. Gay rights activists have worked hard to combat the idea that people decide to be physically attracted to same-sex partners any more than they choose to be attracted to opposite-sex ones because the question, so far unanswered by science, is often used by religious conservatives, including GOP presidential candidate Rick Santorum and former candidate Michelle Bachman, to argue that homosexuality is immoral behavior, not an inherent trait.

Among the activists most horrified by Nixon's comments was Truth Wins Out founder Wayne Besen, whose organization monitors and tries to debunk programs that claim to cure people of same-sex attractions with therapy. Besen said he found the actress' analysis irresponsible and flippant, despite her ample caveats.

"Cynthia did not put adequate thought into the ramifications of her words, and it is going to be used when some kid comes out and their parents force them into some ex-gay camp while she's off drinking cocktails at fancy parties," Besen said. "When people say it's a choice, they are green-lighting an enormous amount of abuse because if it's a choice, people will try to influence and guide young people to what they perceive as the right choice."

Nixon's publicist did not respond to an e-mail asking if the actress wished to comment on the criticism.

While the broader gay rights movement recognizes that human sexuality exists on a spectrum, and has found common cause with transgender and bisexual people, Nixon may have unwittingly given aid and comfort to those who want to deny same-sex couples the right to marry, adopt children and secure equal spousal benefits, said Jennifer Pizer, legal director of the Williams Institute on Sexual Orientation and the Law, a pro-gay think tank based at the University of California, Los Angeles.

One of the factors courts consider in determining if a law is unconstitutional is whether members of the minority group it targets share an unchangeable or "immutable" trait, Pizer noted. Although the definition of how fixed a characteristic has to be to qualify as immutable still is evolving ? religious affiliation, for example, is recognized as grounds for equal protection ? the U.S. Supreme Court still has not included sexual orientation among the traits "so integral to personhood it's not something the government should require people to change," she said.

"If gay people in this country had more confidence that their individual freedom was going to be respected, then the temperature would lower a bit on the immutability question because the idea of it being a choice wouldn't seem to stack the deck against their rights," Pizer said.

Nixon stirred the identity politics pot further when she explained in a follow-up interview with The Daily Beast this week that she purposefully rejected identifying herself as bisexual even though her history suggested it was an accurate term.

"I don't pull out the "bisexual" word because nobody likes the bisexuals. Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals," she said. "But I do completely feel that when I was in relationships with men, I was in love and in lust with those men. And then I met (her fianc?) Christine and I fell in love and lust with her. I am completely the same person and I was not walking around in some kind of fog. I just responded to the people in front of me the way I truly felt."

Although science has not identified either a purely biological or sociological basis for sexual orientation, University of California, Davis psychologist Gregory Herek, an expert on anti-gay prejudice, said Nixon's experience is consistent with research showing that women have an easier time moving between opposite and same-sex partners.

A survey Herek conducted of gay men, lesbians and bisexuals of both genders bore this out. Sixteen percent of the lesbians surveyed reported they felt they had had a fair amount of choice in their sexual orientations, while only five percent of the gay men did. Among bisexuals, the figures were 40 percent for men and 45 percent for women.

What remains to be teased out, Herek said, is how a representative national sample of heterosexuals would answer the same question, and what people mean when their sexual orientation was a choice or not. Are they talking about their sexual desires? Acting on those desires? Or simply the identity they choose to show to the world?

"The nature vs. nurture debate really is pass?," he said. "The debate is not really an either/or debate in the vast majority of cases, but how much of each. We don't know how big a role biology plays and how big a role culture plays. A possibility not often discussed is it's not the same for everybody."

Once Upon a Time: Who's the Evil Queen's Former Love? (omg!)

Giancarlo Esposito, Lana Parrilla | Photo Credits: Jack Rowland/ABC

Mirror, Mirror on the wall, who's the Evil Queen's true love after all?

Once Upon a Time's soulless, heart-crushing Evil Queen (Lana Parrilla) once had a love of her own ? and it wasn't King Leopold (Richard Schiff), Snow White's father who will be introduced on this week's episode of the ABC drama. To find out who that love could be, TVGuide.com turned to the Queen's right-hand man Sidney (Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito), who also dishes on which fairy tale character the Mirror was before he was in the employ of the Queen.

Once Upon a Time's Lana Parrilla: Why the Evil Queen became so evil

Based on the promos for this week's episode, Sidney will be trying to help Emma (Jennifer Morrison) take down Regina.
Esposito:
One of the wild cards in the story is Sidney. We don't quite know where he stands. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad guy? In this particular episode, you see he takes a stand against the mayor, which is very interesting because she's put him in his job. There is that mystical back story that we have in the fairy tale land that, oftentimes, relates to what we do in the Storybrooke world. This is an interesting episode because it leads to us finding out more about who Sidney really is in both worlds.

If he's turning to Emma, Regina must've really hurt him.
Esposito:
As you know, she is totally in control of everything in the Storybrooke world, or at least wants to be. She has really hurt his sensibilities. Sidney is really a guy who has some integrity. He is so wrapped up in the newspaper and wants to be able to tell the truth. This whole storyline is so much about the truth, and she really takes him down. Regina hurts his feelings in such a deep way, but it comes from that other world that we don't yet know about. You'll also find a very big surprise in this episode because all that you see is not really what's real.

Executive producer Adam Horowitz previously said that we'll see who Sidney was before he even became the Mirror. What kind of person was he before then?
Esposito:
He was a person who really believed in love and had aspirations and dreams. Because of what happened between he and Regina, that was taken away from him. Now, he's left with bitterness, anger and a desire to change his circumstance. Before that, he was a man that had hope and believed in people and goodness. So we see someone who is broken in many ways trying to find their way back to good.

Exclusive: Captain America's Sebastian Stan heads to Once Upon a Time

Lana Parrilla teased that the Evil Queen had a prior love interest in a character we have already met. With you saying something happened between the pair, is it possible he was her lover?
Esposito:
Absolutely. I would suggest that there was something a lot deeper between them that didn't go quite the way it was supposed to. Nothing is ever as it seems. We're assuming that it went both ways, but maybe it didn't. Maybe it was just another ruse. It is heartbreaking.

Will we recognize whichever fairy tale character Sidney was before he was the Mirror?
Esposito:
Oh, I think you will. It's such an interesting transition for this character. He's been enslaved in a different way and he becomes free only to be enslaved in this new way.

What will we see of their back story that helped to create the Evil Queen?
Esposito:
It will show how Regina is capable of many things. She's capable of incredible evil. She masks that out of the pain of her own loss, yet she uses that to propel her into a position of power. You'll really begin to see that this Regina, our Evil Queen, is a master manipulator.

Exclusive: Once Upon a Time casts Lost's Emilie de Ravin as Belle

How will Sidney help to break the curse?
Esposito:
I don't know that he will yet. Everyone is just struggling to break the curse because they're stuck in the world of Storybrooke and don't know why. Deep down inside them, they yearn to know and want their freedom. I think all the characters, true to the show, will have the opportunity to experience a brief knowledge or wisp of the past which gives them the desire to get out. I think Sidney will help in many ways because he's so important to the community in writing the paper, so there's ultimately great opportunities for him to be the Paul Revere.

Which character do you think Sidney was before he became the Mirror?

New submitter newmission33 writes "Government researchers have created the fastest, purest X-ray laser pulses ever achieved, and have fulfilled a 1967 prediction that an atomic scale X-ray laser could be made in the same manner as visible-light lasers, according to a statement released Wednesday. Researchers at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory used the Linac Coherent Light Source to aim a powerful X-ray source beam, a billion times brighter than any previous source, at a capsule of neon gas and triggered an 'avalanche' of X-ray emissions to become the world's first 'atomic X-ray laser.'"

Obama courts Latino vote on economic tour

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is courting Hispanics in politically important states, setting himself up as a champion of the crucial Latino voting bloc and as a foil to Republican candidates fighting for a share of support from the same groups.

With Latino voters voting overwhelmingly Democratic, Obama is not in danger of losing the support of a majority of Hispanics. But he does need their intensity, and a Gallup tracking poll shows that while a majority of Hispanics approve of Obama, that approval is not as high as it is among black voters.

Pitching his economic agenda during a three-day, five-state trip this week, Obama has not ignored the fact that three of the states ? Nevada, Arizona and Colorado ? all have Hispanic populations of 20 percent or more. A majority of them are Democratic, but they also could be a factor in upcoming nominating contests in those states. Nevada and Colorado hold caucuses within two weeks and Arizona has a primary Feb. 28.

In Arizona Wednesday, where he was drawing attention to his efforts to increase manufacturing, Obama playfully interacted with a supporter who shouted out: "Barack es mi hermano! (Barack is my brother!)"

"Mi hermano ? mucho gusto (My brother, a real pleasure)," Obama shouted back.

And it was no accident that he scheduled an interview with Univision, the Spanish language network that reaches a broad swath of the U.S. Latino population, while he was in Arizona and with local Telemundo affiliates Thursday in Las Vegas and in Denver. All that while former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and the rest of the Republican presidential field were battling in Florida, another state with a key Latino voting bloc.

"It's an important community in this country and he will continue to have those interactions," White House spokesman Jay Carney said of Obama's efforts to reach out to Spanish language media.

No issue reverberates more in the appeal to Latinos than immigration.

For Obama, it reared up suddenly for him Wednesday when Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican who signed one of the toughest laws to curtail illegal immigration, greeted him at the airport tarmac in Mesa, Ariz., with a handwritten invitation for the president to join her in a visit to the Mexican border.

Obama replied coolly, noting that he did not appreciate the way she had depicted him in a book she published last year, "Scorpions for Breakfast." In the book, Brewer writes that Obama was condescending and lectured her during a meeting at the White House to discuss immigration. "He was a little disturbed about my book," Brewer told two reporters shortly after the encounter.

Obama continued to promote his economic plan Thursday in Nevada and Colorado, focusing on energy policy and his attempts to expand oil and gas exploration while also emphasizing clean energy.

"Doubling down on a clean energy industry will create lots of jobs in the process," the president said at Buckley Air Force Base in Colorado, where the Air Force has installed solar panels and tested jets that run on biofuels.

As such, he was indirectly pitching to Hispanics as well. A new Pew Research Center poll found that 54 percent of Latinos believe that the economic downturn has been harder on them than on other groups in the U.S.

"There is no question that Latinos were hard hit, especially by the bursting of the housing bubble and the resulting steep decline in construction work," Carney said Thursday. "Latinos are overrepresented in the construction industry. It's one of the reasons why, certainly, Latinos would greatly benefit from infrastructure investments that put construction workers back to work."

In 2008, Obama beat Republican John McCain by a 2-1 margin among Hispanics.

To win again, he will need that level of enthusiasm to make up for weaknesses elsewhere in his voter support. In a bright spot for Obama, the Pew poll found that even though Hispanics believe their economic condition is poor, two-thirds of those polled said they expect their financial situation to improve over the next year, whereas 58 percent of the overall population expect the same.

In his interview with Univision, Obama made a point of noting that both Romney and Gingrich have said they would veto legislation, known as the DREAM Act, that would give a pathway to citizenship to children who came to the United States illegally but who attend college or enlist in the military.

"They believe that we should not provide a pathway to citizenship for young people who were brought here when they were very young children and are basically American kids but right now are still in a shadow," Obama said. "They've said that they would veto the DREAM Act. Both of them."

At a debate Monday on NBC, however, both Gingrich and Romney said they would support modified legislation that only applied to young people who joined the military. "I would not support the part that simply says everybody who goes to college is automatically waived for having broken the law," Gingrich said.

Obama, in the interview, explicitly connected the Republican presidential field to congressional Republicans, who suffer from bottom-dwelling approval ratings right now. Asked why he had been unable to deliver on his promise for overhauling the immigration system, Obama replied:

"Well, it's very simple. We couldn't get any Republican votes. Zero. None," he said. "So this is the kind of barrier that we're meeting in Congress. We're just going to keep on pushing and pushing until hopefully we finally get a break."

Sweden's Ericsson says Q4 profits dropped (AP)

STOCKHOLM ? LM Ericsson, the world-leading wireless equipment maker in terms of market share, on Wednesday shocked the market by posting a much worse-than-expected fourth-quarterly result, mainly blaming operators for turning cautious due to the global financial turmoil.

Shares in the company took a severe beating in the opening minutes of the Stockholm stock exchange, tumbling 13 percent to 8.95 kronor ($1.33).

The company, headquartered in Stockholm in Sweden, said profits in the final quarter of 2011 fell by more than two-thirds compared with a year earlier, reaching only 1.15 billion kronor ($170 million) from a previous 4.32 billion kronor. Aside from the woes on the financial markets, it also said operator investment spending had slowed down due to a period of high investment in capacity as well as caution linked to political unrest in some countries.

Although sales were more or less flat in the October-December period, rising by 1 percent to 63.67 billion kronor, the tighter budgets for operators led to a severe squeeze of its gross margin, which fell to 30.2 percent from a previous 34.7 percent.

Losses in its Sony Ericsson joint venture also hurt the results, it said. Ericsson last year sold its share in Sony Ericsson to Sony, but the deal is being finalized in this quarter.

For the full year 2011, however, a 12 percent rise in sales led to a net profit of 12.19 billion kronor, also up 12 percent from the full year in 2010, the company said.

Greger Johansson, an analyst with research firm Redeye said the results fell way below expectations, describing them as "very weak," especially pointing to the disappointing sales figures in Ericsson's core unit, Networks.

"It's pretty much weaker on all areas," he said.

Ericsson CEO Hans Vestberg said that although his company expects operators "to continue to be cautious with spending, reflecting factors such as macro economic and political uncertainty" in the short term, "the industry fundamentals for longer-term positive development remain solid."

"With our global scale and presence, as well as technology and services leadership, we are well positioned to continue to drive and lead the industry development," he said.

Ericsson is the world leader in rolling out and upgrading mobile network infrastructure. Its biggest competitors are China's Huawei and Finnish-German joint venture Nokia Siemens.

Greek creditors urge quick deal after eurozone (Reuters)

ZURICH/ATHENS (Reuters) ? Greece's private creditors pleaded on Tuesday with European officials who rejected their bond swap offer to hammer together a deal before Athens tumbles into a chaotic default.

Athens' hopes for a swift deal with lenders were evaporating after euro zone ministers on Monday rejected creditors' demand for a 4 percent coupon, or interest rate, on new, longer-dated bonds in exchange for existing debt.

The country is desperate for a deal to ensure funds from a 130 billion euro rescue plan drawn up by European partners and the International Monetary Fund arrive before 14.5 billion euros of bond redemptions fall due in March.

"It's important that all parties recognize how much we have at stake and work together and cooperate to find a solution," said Charles Dallara, who negotiates in the name of private bondholders through the International Institute of Finance.

He declined to comment on whether his group would back down on the demand for a 4 percent coupon billed as their "final offer" and said their position was already clear. Greece says it is not prepared to pay a coupon of more than 3.5 percent which would impose steeper losses on its private creditors.

Senior euro zone officials suggested they were preparing for another drawn-out battle despite the ticking clock. They want to make sure any debt swap deal does enough to bring Greece's mountainous debts back on track, to avoid the prospect of having to once again stump up funds for Athens.

German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble dismissed talk of the IIF's "final offer" with: "That happens in every bazaar."

"You do not need to be impressed by that," he said. "At least I do not."

Without a deal, Athens will be forced into a non-voluntary, hard default that could push other weak euro zone members closer to the edge, although experts are beginning to wonder whether the threat of contagion is as severe as it once was after the European Central Bank flooded the banking sector with nearly half a trillion euros of three-year money in December.

Standard & Poor's will likely downgrade Greece's ratings to "selective default" whether or not a debt restructuring is achieved with the voluntary buy-in of private creditors, but the ratings agency said the ripples might not spread.

"It's not a given that Greece's default would have a domino effect in the euro zone," John Chambers, chairman of S&P's sovereign rating committee, said.

The International Monetary Fund is more concerned, however.

It cut its outlook for global growth sharply on Tuesday, said the euro zone debt crisis was escalating and dragging down the world economy and called for policies to restore confidence.

GREEK DEAL STILL ACHIEVABLE

EU Economic and Monetary Affairs Commissioner Olli Rehn said the two sides remain close to an agreement on a Greek debt swap, which he hoped would come this month rather than next.

Caught in the middle between creditors and European partners stepping up a game of brinkmanship, Athens was left clinging on to hope a deal could still be struck in time. It said it had the euro zone's support to complete the talks in the "coming days."

"In reality, we are now entering the final stretch," Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos said in a statement.

"I believe everyone has now realized that Greece must be supported in its effort, which is of vital importance not only for us but for the euro zone as a whole and the global economy."

Conservative leader Antonis Samaras, head of one of three parties backing Greece's technocrat prime minister, told Reuters he expected the talks to be wrapped up by March 5 at the latest and said the country must head to polls as soon as the EU/IMF bailout was finalized.

He set April 8 as the deadline for elections.

"PLAN A MODE"

With weeks of talks yielding little progress and growing concern that Greece's fast-deteriorating economic prospects mean it will need more aid from partners either way, European policymakers appeared to be more willing to consider the previously taboo option of a so-called "involuntary" debt swap.

Both sides have so far firmly stuck to plans for a "voluntary" swap that would avoid insurance against a Greek debt default from being paid out.

"There has been a slight change in mood, but no change in the policy lines pursued," a senior euro zone source told Reuters when asked about the mood among policymakers on Greece.

A second euro zone source confirmed the perception of a shift but said: "We are still in Plan A mode."

A source close to the talks said creditors would go towards an involuntary debt swap if there was no agreement by the end of the week, once again raising the chances of a messy default.

Dallara said he was confident of large-scale participation by bondholders in the swap if the two sides were able to strike a voluntary agreement. He is expected to return to Paris to co-chair an internal meeting of creditors on Wednesday to discuss latest developments in the talks, the IIF said.

The bond swap is meant to cut 100 billion euros from Greece's debt burden of over 350 billion, in a bid to ultimately slash its debt from around 160 percent of GDP to a more manageable 120 percent of GDP by 2020.

Under the agreement drawn up in October to rescue Greece for a second time, bondholders would take a 50 percent writedown on the notional value of their Greek holdings.

Sources close to the protracted Athens talks said last week the two sides were converging on an agreement that would see private creditors accepting a real loss of 65 to 70 percent and new bonds with 30-year maturity.

Greece is stumbling through its worst post-World War Two economic crisis, with unemployment at record highs and frequent protests against austerity measures demanded by its international lenders as a condition for bailout loans.

The country is now in its fifth year of recession and has struggled to push through reforms demanded by lenders.

In a sign that Athens' troubles will be far from over even if a debt swap deal was sealed quickly, Schaeuble warned that all Greek political parties must commit to reforms or risk putting the country's latest bailout plan in danger.

(AP) ? Two people were killed in the Birmingham, Ala., area as storms pounded the South and Midwest, prompting tornado warnings in a handful of states early Monday.

Jefferson County sheriff's spokesman Randy Christian said a 16-year-old boy was killed in Clay and an 82-year-old man died in the community of Oak Grove.

A storm system produced a possible tornado that moved across northern Jefferson County around 3:30 a.m., causing damage in Oak Grove, Graysville, Fultondale, Centerpoint, Clay and Trussville, Christian said. He said several homes were destroyed and numerous injuries were reported.

"Some roads are impassable, there are a number of county roads where you have either debris down, trees down, damage from homes," said Yasamie Richardson, a spokeswoman for the Alabama Emergency Management Agency. Jefferson County experienced "significant damage," she said.

As day broke, rescue crews used chainsaws to clear fallen trees off roads in Clay, northeast of Birmingham. Searchers went door-to-door calling out to residents, many of whom were trapped by trees that crisscrossed their driveways.

Stevie Sanders woke up around 3:30 a.m. and realized bad weather was on the way. She, her parents and sister hid in the laundry room of their brick home as the wind howled and trees started cracking outside.

"You could feel the walls shaking and you could hear a loud crash. After that it got quiet, and the tree had fallen through my sister's roof," said Sanders, 26.

The family was OK, and her father, Greg Sanders, spent the next hours raking his roof and pulling away pieces of broken lumber.

"It could have been so much worse," he said. "It's like they say, we were just blessed."

In Clanton, about 50 miles south of Birmingham, rescuers were responding to reports of a trailer turned over with people trapped, City Clerk Debbie Orange said.

In Arkansas, there were possible tornadoes in Arkansas, Dallas, Lonoke, Prairie and Cleveland counties Sunday night. The storms also brought hail and strong winds as they moved through parts of Arkansas, Tennessee, Illinois and Mississippi.

Tornado warnings were issued for parts of Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama.

The storm also caused officials to reschedule a planned Monday meeting in Montgomery to receive a study on Alabama's response to a system of killer storms that raked the state last April. That storm killed more than 240 people in the state. Among the hardest hit areas then was Tuscaloosa, where 50 were killed.

Sen. Rand Paul has run-in with TSA

The Kentucky senator was detained by TSA officials at the Nashville airport after setting off the alarm on a full body metal detector, then refusing to be patted down. NBC's Kelly O'Donnell reports.

By NBC News and msnbc.com news services

Updated at 4:25 p.m. ET: Senator Rand Paul, R-Ky., clashed with the Transportation Security Administration at a Nashville airport on Monday morning and says that was was "detained" by the government agency.

NBC News reported that he set off a full-body scanning machine while going through airport security. Paul reportedly raised his right pant leg, which may have set off the scanner. Paul, according to aides, said it was ?clearly a glitch? and asked to proceed through the machine a second time. The TSA demanded a full-body pat-down, which Paul refused.

"I was told I couldn't leave, that kind of sounds like you are being detained," Paul told NBC News. "I was put into a small cubicle and told not to leave."

NBC News' Tom Costello reports that, according to sources at the TSA, Paul was not detained, but was escorted by police out of the checkpoint.

In a statement to NBC News, TSA spokesman Greg Soule said, ?When an irregularity is found during the TSA screening process, it must be resolved prior to allowing a passenger to proceed to the secure area of the airport. Passengers who refuse to complete the screening process cannot be granted access to the secure area in order to ensure the safety of others traveling.?

Paul was eventually permitted through airport security, according to Soule. ?The passenger has since rebooked on another flight and was rescreened without incident,? he said in a statement at about noon on Monday.

Paul, who has previously called for the TSA to be abolished, told NBC News that passengers should not be subjected to pat-downs.

"I really think no American should have to go through all of this," he said. "I think if the screener goes off and you don't want to have a pat down search, you ought to be able to go back through the screener." Paul says he was sent back through the screener when he went to board his re-booked flight.
