COMMENTARY | The U.S. Navy really knows how to save a buck or two, especially when it comes to finding unique uses for highly specialized warships, like a giant aircraft carrier. One such incidence was captured on film this week when the USS Ronald Reagan CVN 76 became the world's largest floating parking lot.
Jalopnik reported the Navy's newest active aircraft carrier was sailing from southern California to Bremerton, Wash., and decided to bring along the personal autos of her sailors rather than pay for separate transport costs or reimburse her sailors to drive them there. It was a great way to save the Pentagon millions of dollars in transport costs especially since the carrier travels that distance without its air wing onboard. Cars and small trucks were parked on the flight deck and inside different compartments of the hanger bay.
In addition to making perfect use of an otherwise empty aircraft carrier, it just made sense -- and that's a rarity in any government agency. The Navy said it's a common occurrence when circumstances permit and that's good to hear. But taxpayers need to hear more instances like this instead of the $200 hammers and $5,000 toilets that used to fill the newspapers years ago. It's good to know that sometimes there is some civil servant actually using their head to save a few dollars.
And before all the naysayers start fussing and complaining that it was a poor use for such an expensive ship, let's remember the $4.5 billion nuclear-powered ship would have been cruising to Bremerton anyway -- with or without the cargo. It just made sense to load it down with something practical and save the Navy some money.
Hopefully, the cruise goes smoothly and maybe, just maybe, there will be a photographer at the other end so we can see how the cars are unloaded.
